Fans always suspected the chemistry between Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek wasn’t entirely acting. Now, years after their on-again, off-again romance lit up the screen, former crew members confirm what many guessed: Marina Squerciati and Patrick Flueger were romantically involved in real life.
“It wasn’t a PR thing,” said a makeup artist. “It was real — and it made their scenes intense.”
According to insiders, the relationship began during Season 3 — right as Burgess and Ruzek’s storylines were heating up. Their chemistry made them a fan-favorite, but behind the scenes, it complicated things.
“They were great together — until they weren’t,” said a script coordinator. After a brief breakup off camera, filming their emotional scenes became difficult. At one point, a dramatic argument scene had to be paused repeatedly due to tension.
Writers began reducing their shared screen time. Some of the most emotional dialogue was reassigned or rewritten entirely.
Eventually, they reportedly reconciled off-screen — but with new boundaries.
Today, the actors remain friendly and professional. But the romance that helped shape Chicago P.D.’s most iconic couple is no longer just fiction.
It was real. And for a while, it was everything.
