The Twilight TV Series: Confirmation & Everything We Know

Stephenie Meyer’s polarizing Twilight series is being rebooted into a brand-new TV show, but this time the 2000s vampire phenomenon will be animated.

Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance series Twilight is returning in a brand-new reboot TV series, but this time it will be animated. Starting with the release of Meyer’s best-selling novel Twilight in 2005, the teen romance epic follows the life of outcast Bella Swan who becomes the object of two boys’ affection. However, her two suitors aren’t just normal teens, one is an ancient vampire while the other is a member of a werewolf pack. Across the four main novels in the series, the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob will become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon.

Although the novels in the Twilight series were big in their own right, the story gained its worldwide audience with the release of 2008’s adaptation of the eponymous first novel. While the Twilight movies were met with middling reviews, they were each blockbusters and helped relaunch the paranormal romance genre which had been started years earlier by authors like Anne Rice. Now, more than a decade after the film series concluded, the Twilight saga is being rebooted on the small screen.

The New TV Adaptation Will Be Animated

Although the project was first announced in 2023, the latest update reveals the Twilight TV show will be animated. In a surprising twist, the reboot of the Stephenie Meyer best-selling quadrilogy will not be a straightforward live-action reimagining, but a cartoon. Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns spoke on the subject of the Twilight TV show and revealed the strange change of plans. However, it is now being reported that an animated series was always the plan, although the initial announcement didn’t mention that crucial detail.

The Twilight TV Series Is Confirmed
The Project Was Revealed In 2023

Just over a decade after The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 debuted in theaters in 2012, it was announced that a new Twilight TV show was in the works from Lionsgate in early 2023. This announcement failed to mention the series will be animated, a detail that was later disclosed nearly a year later, in early 2024. No names are attached to the project behind the scenes at this juncture, and it is unknown if author Stephenie Meyer will be involved.

Likewise, no roles have been cast yet, and the likelihood of the original stars returning is slim to none. As much as the Twilight film series was a cultural touchstone of the aughts, it was also the butt of a lot of ridicule for reasons both justified and otherwise. Since Lionsgate has not revealed how they will approach the material, it is difficult to speculate about the project, or who could be brought in to star in front of the camera and work creatively behind the scenes.

The Animated Series Will Adapt The Books Again

While the scope of the new Twilight series is still unknown, it can be assumed that the animated show will attempt to tackle the four books in the Stephenie Meyer series in order. If the series goes in a linear timeline, it will start with the eponymous novel, which sees Bella move to Washington State, where she eventually meets Edward and Jacob. Their love triangle quickly escalates in the next book before things only get more dramatic from there. It is highly unlikely that the series will try to adapt all four books in one season.

It is unknown what the intention of the adaptation is, and it could either be a faithful take or editorialize the controversial elements of Meyer’s Twilight book series. The fact that it will be animated is enough of a twist to draw in some viewers, but only time will tell how Lionsgate’s latest stab at Twilight will be approaching. More details are expected in the future.
