Season 7 of The Rookie was packed with many subplots to keep audiences engaged. The return of Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), Bailey’s (Jenna Dewan) abusive and criminal ex-husband, meant that for a time period, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his wife were caught in the eye of a violent storm. The introduction of new recruits, Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) and Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher), meant the chance to explore new stories with Seth’s compulsion to lie a key part of the season’s storyline. Among this and other subplots, the writers and showrunner Alexi Hawley also had to craft out some space for Chenford’s romance to be explored.
Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) saw their relationship end in Season 6 when Tim unilaterally decided he was not good enough for Lucy. The couple spent a large part of Season 7 working their way back to each other. Despite several hook-up situations, it seemed like the pair were not making any serious headway towards becoming a couple as their will-they-won’t-they dynamic persisted. In an interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Hawley was quizzed on whether this will persist into Season 8. He responded, saying:
“We’re heading in a really good direction for fans of Chenford. This season has taken them on a journey that we all felt, on the show and in the room, was important to both deal with the real repercussions of what Tim did and the very real pain that he caused, including to himself, and trying to figure out why he did what he did and having Lucy have to forgive him.”
It occasionally felt like the show made up obstacles for Chenford to overcome in Season 7 just for the fun of it. The situation with Lucy passing her sergeant exams seemed to be the final one, but Hawley suggests that Season 8 would likely see the pair return to being a couple once more. “That didn’t feel like a ‘three episodes and everything’s good again’ kind of story,” Hawley added. “But I feel like now that that journey has been taken that we’re at the end of that journey. I think that moment at the end is very sweet. We’re not teasing anybody. We’re heading in a good direction.”
Might This Complicated ‘The Rookie’ Character Return?
Seth Ridley was one of the most interesting characters in The Rookie Season 7. After consistently lying to escape trouble, Seth’s lies finally caught up to him and earned him a suspension. Ultimately, the show brought him back, attempting a redemption arc as the recruit helped save Nolan’s life. With the show set to bring back big villains like Monica Stevenson (Bridget Regan) and Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) at some point. There arises the question of whether Seth might return in some capacity despite his career-ending injury. “I don’t think it’s the end,” Hawley revealed in a previous interview. “It’s early days. We started the [writers] room [last Monday], but I would like to see him again,” he added.
All episodes of The Rookie are available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
