‘The Rookie’ Season 8: Sergeant Grey to Shape Chenford’s Future, Star Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Influence

The Chenford romance is one of, if not, the most beloved relationships in the long-running police procedural, The Rookie. While Bailey (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan’s (Nathan Fillion) marriage has its own appeal, the dynamic between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) has seen fans of the show embark on a roller-coaster ride for a number of seasons now. By the time Season 7 ended, the couple had reunited romantically after their breakup in Season 6, and Richard T. Jones, who plays Sergeant Grey, has teased how this might affect the couple’s relationship with their superior.

Grey had always been on the side of Chen, and the glee and pride were exceedingly evident when he presented Chen with news of her promotion. The officer had also cultivated a close relationship with Bradford, so when he received word the pair were casually seeing each other again, it threw him off. His concern: How might it affect their work dynamic? Speaking to ScreenRant, Jones spoke about Lucy and Tim, and how he sees his character being hot on Lucy to keep Tim in check when the show returns for its eighth season. Jones’ comments read:

Grey always knows. It’s funny because I think Grey has always been aware of this thing. I’m just hoping that Tim makes the wise decision and steps away, but now I know he can’t step away, so now I’m actually pushing it on her to run this thing because Bradford is whipped. Alright? That man is whipped over some Chen, so she’s kind of running the show. What you’re going to see next year is me trying to appeal to her, like, “Look, just keep him focused.”

The Future Looks Rosy for Chenford

Lucy passing her sergeant exams was a huge moment in a season filled with romantic uncertainty for long spells. Having a sure footing at work certainly helped. The will-they/won’t-they dynamic between Chenford was a key feature of Season 7 and, while there were those who enjoyed itsome of us pined for the pair to become official once more. Showrunner Alexi Hawley discussed if the uncertainty would persist between the pair come Season 8.

Hawley explained that exploring the grief of their breakup in Season 6 was not a “three episodes and everything’s good again kind of story.” But with that done now, the pair can move forward. “I feel like now that that journey has been taken that we’re at the end of that journey. I think that moment at the end is very sweet. We’re not teasing anybodyWe’re heading in a good direction,” Hawley added.

Besides romance, Season 8 will also explore some villains who will return to torment the fine officers of the LAPD. The Season 7 finale ensured that big villains like Monica Stevenson (Bridget Regan) and Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) would make their return at some point.
