“The Rookie” Season 8 Reveals Big News: Showrunner Drops Major Hints Ahead of Season 7’s Conclusion!

The future of The Rookie just got a major update ahead of its most important episode yet. Nathan Fillion’s new police procedural is due to air its next finale next week on Tuesday, May 13, and with seven solid seasons under its belt in seven years, fans are already curious about where the show is heading next. Things have been heating up on The Rookie for the last few weeks, particularly in the penultimate episode, which saw Angela (Alyssa Diaz) and Nyla (Mekia Cox) ask their mothers to help on a case while Wesley (Shawn Ashmore) is threatened. Collider’s Therese Lacson recently sat down for an interview with The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley, who revealed that the writer’s room for Season 8 is already underway, and also teased the conclusion of the parental storyline:

“I don’t know, that’s a good question. It’s still very early days, like the room literally started yesterday for Season 8. Again, if there’s an organic story that feels like seeing her parents again has value, we totally will. That door was shut pretty hard with her mom and the lack of support. I don’t have a story in my head yet, but I am always looking for something.”

The Rookie has become one of the most popular police procedurals on television since it aired in 2018. While the show began on the back of Nathan Fillion, it enlisted a star-studded talent roster to come to his aid. Fillion may be the only one to feature in all 144 episodes of The Rookie to date, but following closely behind him are four series regulars who have all appeared in 126 episodes, trailing Fillion’s total by 18. Alyssa Diaz (Detective Angela Lopez), Richard T. Jones (Lieutenant Wade Grey), Melissa O’Neil (Officer Lucy Chen), and Eric Winter (Sergeant Tim Bradford) are all series veterans who have been around since the first season. Mekia Cox and Shawn Ashmore have featured in 103 and 95 episodes of The Rookie as Detective Nyla Harper and Wesley Evers, respectively.

What Time Does ‘The Rookie’ Air and How Can You Watch It Live?

New episodes of The Rookie air for the first time on Tuesdays at 9 PM ET on ABC, and they begin streaming on Hulu the following day. All episodes of Seasons 1-6 are currently streaming on Hulu, as well as every episode except the finale in Season 7. The Rookie was officially renewed for Season 8 at the start of April, and although the writer’s room has officially begun, according to Hawley, there’s no word about a potential release date. However, given the show’s history, the series will likely return this fall or early next year.
