The next spinoff of The Rookie gets a big update from creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley. It was reported this past December that a new spinoff of The Rookie was being developed by ABC, 20th Television, and Lionsgate Television. It was noted at the time that the project is in its early stages, with Hawley set to write the script, which would take place in Washington state. There haven’t been meaningful updates on the status of the potential series, though it is not on ABC’s schedule for the 2025-2026 broadcast television season.
Speaking with TVLine, Hawley gave an update on The Rookie spinoff and noted that he feels positive about the script. Hawley, who also serves as executive producer of the police procedural franchise, noted that he’s waiting to hear from ABC about the status of the project. In the quote below, Hawley touches on the cancellation of his Netflix spy dramedy The Recruit and mentions what makes The Rookie different:
“I feel really good about the script. Ultimately, we’re waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC], but I feel very positive about it. My caveat, said with a genuine laugh, is that I also felt very positive about Season 3 of [Netflix’s] The Recruit, and it ended up not happening. But look, it’s apples and oranges. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for them…. Beyond that, it’s out of my hands.”
What The Latest Update Means For The Rookie’s Spinoff Chances
It Could Be On A Slower Track
It may be the case that the spinoff is on a slower developmental track, which means there isn’t as much of a hurry to get it on the ABC schedule. The series, which would be The Rookie‘s second spinoff after the short-lived Rookie: Feds, would maintain the same general premise of following a protagonist who becomes a police officer later in life. No news about possible casting has been reported.
But after The Rookie franchise’s first spinoff attempt didn’t continue for the long haul, due to a combination of lower ratings than expected and complications from the Hollywood strikes of 2023, it may be the case that a more patient approach with the next spinoff will work better overall. After renewing all of its scripted shows, with only medical drama Doctor Odyssey remaining on the bubble, ABC will add only one new show to its roster next season: 9-1-1: Nashville.
Our Take On The Rookie’s Next Spinoff
Let’s Wait And See
ABC may not be in any particular rush to set up a new spinoff. The original series has had some of the best viewership of its entire run, buoyed by streaming numbers on Hulu. That has been enough to secure a renewal for The Rookie season 8, although the next iteration of the overall franchise will take a little longer to germinate. When it does happen, casting will be key to the success.
The Rookie season 7 airs Tuesdays at 9 PM ET on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
