The Rookie: Feds Just Got Spicier – Here’s the Script Update Everyone’s Talking About!

The next spinoff of The Rookie gets a big update from creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley. It was reported this past December that a new spinoff of The Rookie was being developed by ABC, 20th Television, and Lionsgate Television. It was noted at the time that the project is in its early stages, with Hawley set to write the script, which would take place in Washington state. There haven’t been meaningful updates on the status of the potential series, though it is not on ABC’s schedule for the 2025-2026 broadcast television season.

Speaking with TVLineHawley gave an update on The Rookie spinoff and noted that he feels positive about the script. Hawley, who also serves as executive producer of the police procedural franchise, noted that he’s waiting to hear from ABC about the status of the project. In the quote below, Hawley touches on the cancellation of his Netflix spy dramedy The Recruit and mentions what makes The Rookie different:

“I feel really good about the script. Ultimately, we’re waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC], but I feel very positive about it. My caveat, said with a genuine laugh, is that I also felt very positive about Season 3 of [Netflix’s] The Recruit, and it ended up not happening. But look, it’s apples and oranges. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for them…. Beyond that, it’s out of my hands.”
