The Lost Sanford and Son Episode That NBC Never Aired—And Why It Still Matters

During its groundbreaking run, Sanford and Son filmed an episode so controversial it was pulled before airing. The storyline tackled police brutality in a way that was too raw for 1970s television executives.

In the episode, Fred Sanford witnesses a violent arrest in Watts and speaks out, causing tension between his friends and the police. Redd Foxx fought to keep the script intact, but NBC caved under advertiser pressure.

To this day, the episode remains in the vaults, unseen by the public. Yet cast and crew have called it one of the show’s most powerful moments. “Redd was furious,” one writer said. “He knew it mattered.”

Redd Fox was 49 when he was cast for Sanford and Son. Looking at his photo today, I realize he was not NEARLY as old as I thought he was back then… :

Fans still petition for its release—arguing it was ahead of its time and deserves to be seen now more than ever.
