NCIS’ final active actors from the original cast reunite for the first time after so many years. The NCIS franchise has come a long way since the flagship debuted in 2003. Mark Harmon’s decision to leave resulted in Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ retirement in NCIS season 19. It has been a few years, but there’s still a yearning for its earliest seasons.
At this point, the chances of a reunion of the inaugural cast of NCIS are none. David McCallum passed away in 2023, with the show mirroring it for his character. Meanwhile, Sasha Alexander’s Kate Todd has been dead for years, while Pauley Perrette has vowed to never return as Abby Sciuto.
Despite these, however, 2 of the remaining original cast members of NCIS who are still active in the universe recently reunited. Michael Weatherly and Joe Spano crossed paths during Don Bellisario’s 90th birthday. Check out a screenshot of their reunion from Weatherly’s Instagram.

What Weatherly & Spano’s Reunion Might Mean For NCIS’ DiNozzo & Fornell
For context, Weatherly played Tony DiNozzo Jr. in the show until NCIS season 13. Now, however, he’s back for Paramount+’s NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Meanwhile, Spano has been a recurring guest star on the main show for years, following his debut as Tobias Fornell in the NCIS pilot.
Weatherly last returned to the flagship series during Ducky’s send-off episode — an appearance that would be the beginning of his full-time comeback to the franchise via his spinoff. Interestingly, Spano’s latest appearance was just a few weeks later, in NCIS‘ 1000th episode, which revisited the procedural’s very first case. Sadly, DiNozzo and Fornell’s paths haven’t crossed on-screen in recent years.
At this point, it doesn’t seem like DiNozzo and Fornell will be sharing the screen anytime soon in the NCIS franchise. Despite both being active players in the universe, they exist in very different circles. While the door is open for their reunion, don’t expect it to happen in the near future.
Our Take On Weatherly & Spano’s Nostalgic Reunion
It’s easy to forget that Spano’s Fornell is actually part of the original cast of NCIS. The actor has appeared in more episodes than some of the MCRT members, who were only in the series for a brief while. Aside from his ties to the agency as an FBI employee, he is also Gibbs’ most prominent personal friend.
With such a long history, however, NCIS can easily tap into nostalgia by staging awaited reunion. Fornell and DiNozzo may not be in the cards for now, but perhaps CBS can start with Weatherly’s character and some of his former MCRT co-workers.
