Well, here’s one piece of news that’s sure to disappoint plenty of die-hard fans of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey.
In a new interview with Variety, director Sam Taylor-Johnson reveals that one of the more infamous sex scenes in the book — in which Christian Grey pulls a tampon out of Anastasia Steele’s body — is not featured in the final film.
“It didn’t make it into the movie,” Taylor-Johnson says. “It was never even discussed.”
Not surprisingly given the scene’s graphic — and let’s face it, a little gross — nature, the producers decided it was best of the film didn’t go there.
“The book needed to put you in Ana’s shoes to be a successful experience,” producer Michael De Luca tells the outlet. “A lot of it was very literal. The movie didn’t need to do that. It’s a completely different medium.”
According to the director, the sex scenes in the R-rated film are all “integral” to the story rather than being “gratuitous.” De Luca reveals that the film’s most intense scene will actually be towards the end of the film, which is the big-screen adaptation of Christian and Ana’s last encounter from the first book in the trilogy.
“The scene that we talked about a lot is the final scene, where Ana asks him to do the worst he can do to show her how bad it’s going to get,” De Luca shares. “It’s the closest Christian comes in the first book to being his full dominant self. Jamie’s performance in that scene is a miracle. He really gets carried away in the moment.”
But what does Jamie Dornan himself say was the hardest part of playing billionaire Christian Grey?
Performing the “dreaded orgasm face.”
“It’s the worst thing imaginable,” he shares. “For all the reasons anyone would think, most people would like to keep their sex face private. The idea of a million people seeing that! I hope it happens quite fast.”
He also had a few problems using a whip. “There’s probably a technique to using a whip,” he muses. “I wasn’t talented at it. But I got there in the end. It’s really like fly-fishing.”
His aggressive nature with the whip may explain some of the rope burn experienced on set. “I’d have to remind Jamie to hold back with the crop,” Taylor-Johnson admits.
Looks like Dornan had no problems at all embodying the character on-screen.
