When The Honeymooners aired in the 1950s, television comedy was still discovering its identity. But one moment from the show would unexpectedly become one of the most famous catchphrases in TV history.
The phrase came from the hot-tempered bus driver Ralph Kramden, played by Jackie Gleason.
Whenever Ralph became frustrated, he would dramatically shout:
“One of these days… POW! Right to the moon!”
Although the line was meant to be exaggerated comedy rather than a real threat, audiences instantly remembered it. The phrase quickly became a pop-culture reference repeated for decades.
What many fans don’t realize is that the line was partially improvised by Gleason during rehearsal. His ability to exaggerate anger in a comedic way made Ralph Kramden one of the most recognizable sitcom characters ever created.
Even today, the catchphrase remains one of the most quoted lines from classic television.
