“The Golden Bachelor” stars Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist are divorcing after three months of marriage.
The couple met and got married on season one of ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor.”
They announced their split on “Good Morning America” on Friday and said they still love each other.
“The Golden Bachelor” stars Gerry Turner, 72, and Theresa Nist, 70, are going their separate ways after three months of marriage.
“Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth, and we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to dissolve our marriage,” Turner told Juju Chang in a joint interview with Nist for “Good Morning America” released on Friday.
Clarifying his statement, the couple confirmed that they are getting a divorce.
The pair met when Turner, a widower, was cast as the lead on ABC’s inaugural season of “The Golden Bachelor.” Nist, one of the season’s contestants, won Turner’s heart, and he proposed to her in Costa Rica during the season one finale, which aired in November.
Turner and Nist got married in early January during a live televised wedding ceremony called “The Golden Wedding,” officiated by fellow “Golden Bachelor” contestant Susan Noles.
Season one of “The Golden Bachelor” was a hit with Bachelor Nation, with 6.1 million viewers tuning in to the finale, Variety reported. The episode was the franchise’s most-watched episode since the finale of Matt James’ season of “The Bachelor” in 2021.
On April 1, TMZ reported that the newlyweds were still living separately, with Turner in Indiana and Nist in New Jersey. Despite this, the couple continued making public appearances together during the live portion of the season 28 finale of “The Bachelor” and more recently at a Hulu on Disney+ event in LA on April 5.
When asked what had changed in the short amount of time since they professed their love for each other on national TV, Turner emphasized that they’re devoted to their families.
“The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations, it’s been how dedicated both of us are to our families,” he said. “So we look at these situations and I think we just feel like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to, to live apart.”
Nist said that the plan was to live together, probably in South Carolina, but they also considered New Jersey.
“We just looked at home after home, but we never got to the point where we made that decision,” she said.
Turner and Nist signed a prenuptial agreement and said they’ll both be returning their rings. Even though they ended their relationship, the pair said that they still love each other.
“I still love this person,” Turner said. “There’s no doubt in my mind, I still am in love with her. I root for her every day.”
And while their relationship didn’t go the distance, Nist encouraged fans not to give up on love.
“Stay in it, stay hopeful, because we are,” Nist said.
