Derek Haas is sharing his thoughts about FBI: International wrapping up its run after four seasons on CBS this May. The co-creator shed light on the network’s decision to cancel the series.
The show, along with FBI: Most Wanted, was officially canceled by CBS back in early March, leaving fans and even those behind the scenes surprised by the move.
In a recent conversation with TVLine, Haas expressed his sadness about the show coming to an end.
“I was so sad to hear about the cancellation because I loved [Chicago P.D. star] Jesse Soffer [International’s new lead] as Wes on the show and really thought it was a dynamic cast addition in Season 4,” Haas shared.
Soffer’s addition had been seen as a fresh and exciting change for the series, and many were looking forward to where the character’s arc would go next.
Haas admitted he doesn’t have inside knowledge about why the show was cut.
“I have no insight into why it was canceled. I love [CBS Entertainment President] Amy [Reisenbach] and [EVP of current programming and daytime programming] Eric [Kim] over at CBS, plus all my good friends at Wolf [Entertainment], and trust their instincts.
So they must’ve had reasons that had nothing to do with the quality of the show,” he said.
When speaking to the press earlier in May, Reisenbach acknowledged how difficult it was for the network to say goodbye to several programs, including some that performed well in ratings.
She specifically mentioned Most Wanted, International, and The Equalizer as part of that group.
“It’s not easy to end shows and we had a lot of options this year,” Reisenbach explained.
“The schedule is really full and so we always have to look at all of our shows, look at the aggregate information, the creative of where they are in their life cycle, what the finances look like, what the ratings are, and then we make those tough decisions.”
Despite its cancellation, FBI: International left a lasting impact on its viewers, and the cast and crew’s dedication to delivering thrilling stories will be remembered by fans of the franchise.
