Right, here’s how rich The Cooper family actually was in Young Sheldon
George Cooper broke his back on those football fields
The Coopers in Young Sheldon are your typical American family – they’re problematic, a bit wacky but have a huge amount of love for one another. George and Mary Cooper are both present parents, albeit in very different ways, but I wouldn’t stretch so far as to say they’re high fliers when it comes to their careers.
Whilst George is merely a humble high school football coach, Mary juggles being a church secretary and a stay at home mum.
So it begs the question, how rich are The Coopers in Young Sheldon?

The Coopers are a working class family and certainly aren’t rich. Their financial struggles are touched upon in the show and whilst they have a roof over their heads and food on the table, money is tight and it affects their decisions and family dynamics.
With George and Mary’s positions being modest paying jobs but certainly not high income, their earnings are just enough to cover essentials, but not much more. And to determine how rich The Coopers were in Young Sheldon, it’s important to remember when the show was set.
They live in a modest house in Medford, Texas, but the family is careful with money. This can be seen in multiple episodes of the TV show where they worry about paying bills, make decisions on affordability when it comes to schooling, and Mary uses coupons or speaks about budgeting. Meemaw’s gambling is a whole other kettle of fish.
George also works extra at times, on an estimated salary of $30,000 to $40,000 a year in 1990s Texas. Mary would probably only have earned $5,000 to $10,000 annually if employed part time.
Set in the 1980s to early 1990s, Mary and George’s combined annual income can be estimated to have been around $35,000 to $50,000 a year – but that’s more like $80,000 to $100,000 a year in today’s economy.
That might sound higher than expected, but its certainly on the lower end of the spectrum for a family of five and is reflected in the storyline a lot.
