We can already promise that the Big Bang Theory spinoff is gonna (ahem) rock. That’s because Brian Posehn is set to reprise his role as Caltech geologist Bert, opposite fellow franchise vets Kevin Sussman and Lauren Lapkus.
As previously reported, a direct sequel to the original Big Bang Theory is in development at Warner Bros. Discovery. The untitled spinoff was first confirmed in April 2023 — four years after the hit CBS sitcom wrapped its 12-season, 279-episode run — when WBD disclosed that original series co-creator Chuck Lorre was developing a new comedy series “derived from” the mothership. But beyond its streaming destination, no further details were announced — and three weeks later, the Writers Guild of America went on a 148-day strike, which put any further development on hold for the duration of the industry walkout (which ended that September).
Now, more than a year later, we know quite a bit about the potential offshoot, including which familiar faces from the original series will return both behind and in front of the camera. Keep scrolling to learn more about Big Bang 2.0….
Who is writing the Big Bang Theory spinoff?
Feature writer Zak Penn (The Avengers, Ready Player One, Free Guy) will pen the script with original series co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.
Though plot details remain under wraps, there’s reason to be excited. After all, when Lorre told TVLine in 2019 that a solid spinoff conceit failed to materialize before The Big Bang Theory wrapped production, he explained that “unless there was a creative reason to do it — a wonderfully, wonderfully creative reason to do it — than the only reason [to do it] is economics, and that’s not good enough.” That leads us to believe that the sitcom titan has a pretty spectacular idea up his sleeve — and now we know who it will involve.
Who is returning for the Big Bang Theory spinoff?
In October, franchise vets Kevin Sussman (Stuart), Lauren Lapkus (Denise) and Brian Posehn (Bert) all signed deals to star in the potential offshoot. No further Big Bang Theory alumni are currently attached.
Who is open to returning for the Big Bang Theory spinoff?
Mayim Bialik, who previously reunited with Jim Parsons in Young Sheldon’s May 2024 series finale, recently told TVLine that she is game to reprise Amy Farrah Fowler on the forthcoming spinoff — should she get the call.
“I would 100% reprise Amy,” she said. “I have no qualms about that. I think it would be fantastic, and I know people have such a special attachment to all these characters.”
Kaley Cuoco, meanwhile, told People that she would “absolutely” play Penny again, adding: “I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to Chuck Lorre…. I love that character, and I always will.”
Kunal Nayyar, who played Raj, told TVLine in February 2024 that it felt “a little too soon” to return to the role of Raj. Meanwhile, Parsons said as recently as October that, as far as playing Sheldon again, “I would never say never to anything.”
How many shows are set in the Big Bang Theory universe?
The as-yet-untitled spinoff would be the fourth entry in the TBBT universe, following The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019, streaming on Max), prequel series Young Sheldon (2017-2024, streaming on Max and Netflix), and Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (2024-, streaming on Paramount+).
Where can I watch the Big Bang Theory spinoff?
The Big Bang Theory spinoff starring Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus and Brian Posehn has not received a series order as of press time — but TVLine will keep you posted once there is further news to share. Should it move forward, episodes would eventually stream exclusively on Max.
