The Big Bang Theory Officially Returns for an All-New Chapter md14

The Big Bang Theory franchise has always played a little loose with time — especially since the original series wasn’t created with prequels in mind. When Young Sheldon debuted, it had to carefully build a believable 1990s childhood for Sheldon Cooper while still fitting into the world fans already knew.

One key moment gave the timeline a rare fixed point: April 6, 1992 — the day legendary sci-fi author Isaac Asimov passed away.

In Season 5’s “Babies, Lies and a Resplendent Cannoli,” young Sheldon is devastated by the news. Asimov isn’t just another author to him; he’s a hero. Co-creator Steve Molaro later explained that while the show intentionally keeps most dates vague, Asimov’s death was a real historical marker they chose to acknowledge.

Because Young Sheldon is narrated by adult Sheldon — who admits memory isn’t perfect — the timeline bends when necessary. But Asimov’s death provides one solid anchor in an otherwise flexible chronology.

Considering Sheldon’s lifelong admiration for Foundation and I, Robot (not to mention his constant references to the Three Laws of Robotics), tying the show’s timeline to Asimov’s passing feels both meaningful and fitting.
