Jim Parsons Felt ‘Weird’ Auditioning with Johnny Galecki Due to His Roseanne Fame
Have you heard of the old saying, ‘Lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice?’ Well, in the case of The Big Bang Theory, it came twice, and both times, it hit a comedy bull’s eye. Jim Parsons, the iconic Sheldon Cooper, revealed that he felt a bit weird auditioning alongside Johnny Galecki, the lovable Leonard Hofstadter, for a simple reason. Parsons confessed during a roundtable discussion with Entertainment Weekly:
I already knew who Johnny was from Roseanne. That was weird because I don’t think I’ve ever auditioned alongside someone I had seen act before. I read with other people, but it was very clear that no one else was making the part their own more than Johnny did.
Despite Galecki’s talent, he still had millions of viewers tuning in. Parsons soon realized that Galecki understood the character well and didn’t need his guidance.
He knew what he was doing and was doing it in a strong way. I didn’t feel like he needed my help. I didn’t feel like he was bleeding into my work. He was his own distinct thing.
Galecki’s performance was once again stellar, making Parsons feel a bit overshadowed but also pushing him to add more flair to Sheldon Cooper. Off-camera, they were great friends, and their scenes looked super natural. Galecki and the rest of The Big Bang Theory cast have become a global favorite.
The Big Bang Theory Creators Reveal Jim Parsons Was Almost Rejected For Sheldon Role
If you’ve ever wondered how anyone could pass on Jim Parsons for Sheldon Cooper, you’re not alone. Parsons was just perfect for the quirky, smart, and awkward role. It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing it. However, as the show’s co-creator Bill Prady once revealed, Parsons was very close to missing out on the role.
In an episode on At Home with the Creative Coalition podcast, Prady came clean and stated that his co-creator, Chuck Lorre, was not impressed with the actor’s audition. Prądy recalled (via Wionews):
When Jim Parsons came in, he was Sheldon on a level — you know, there were people who came in and you went, `Okay, well, he`s kind of okay,` `Oh, he`s pretty good,` `Maybe he`s the guy.` And Jim came in and he was just — from that audition, he was the Sheldon that you saw on television.
He created that character at that audition, and he left the room and I turned and I went, `That`s the guy! That`s the guy! That`s the guy!` And Chuck turned and he said, `Nah, he`s gonna break your heart. He`ll never give you that performance again.
Chuck Lorre worried Parsons might not keep up his stellar performance, but Prady’s faith paid off. Parsons not only nailed Sheldon but helped create one of TV’s most beloved characters. And the rest is TV history.
