They pursued me for ‘The Big Bang Theory, and I said no. It was kind of like, the way the pitch was, ‘Alright, these two astrophysicist nerds and a pretty girl live with them. Yoinks!’ That was the pitch. They were like, ‘We’ll get some real physicists to do the math,’ but I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m cool, thanks.’ And then they came back at me again, and I said, ‘No, no, no. Again, flattered, but no.’ Then they came back at me again, and even my manager was like twisting my arm.
Although Culkin didn’t mention anything about being offered the role of Leonard Hofstadter, the show’s Executive Producers confirmed the story in 2022. Overall, it seems that Culkin didn’t want to be associated with the show, which is fair considering that he worked on a lot of other projects during the early 2000s. The child star retired from acting at just 14 years old and spent his adult life producing passion projects, like his semi-autographical novel “Junior”, which was about the actor’s strained relationship with his father. As such, the role of Leonard Hofstadter was given to Galecki, and the rest is history.

Admittedly, spin-offs are pretty common these days, but the fact that The Big Bang Theory has produced two long-running sitcoms besides the original is pretty impressive. The initial sitcom tied everything up quite nicely, and fans were pleased to let all of the characters go off and live happily ever after. Yet, the team still continues to find new stories to tell, proving that the sitcom is not just a bundle of pop culture clichés, but an endearing show about found families.
