One of the most interesting things about The Beverly Hillbillies is a subtle joke that ran through almost the entire series.
Even though the Clampetts became millionaires overnight, they never behaved like wealthy people. Their enormous mansion, expensive cars, and massive bank account never changed their everyday habits.
This was especially noticeable with Jethro Bodine, played by Max Baer Jr..
Jethro constantly believed he was destined for greatness. In different episodes he decided he would become a brain surgeon, a movie star, a secret agent, and even a double-naught spy. Of course, none of these plans ever worked.
But the brilliance of the joke was that the family supported him every time.
Their wealth was never the focus of their lives. Instead, they cared about family, food, and simple happiness.
That running joke reminded viewers that the Clampetts’ greatest strength wasn’t money—it was their sincerity.
