Tessa, the After movie-verse just got even bigger.
“A prequel and a next-generation sequel” are currently in the works for the After movie series, according to Teen Vogue. Director Castille Landon, who worked on both After We Fell and After Ever Happy, will return to the franchise as both writer and director for projects.
“The After universe just keeps expanding,” she said. “The fandom, and how excited they are and their input, it really does inspire us all as creators every single day.”
According to the report, the new prequel will be loosely based off of Before, which follows Hardin before the events of After. “He’s gone through a lot of trauma in his family life and in his relationships, and [we’ll] see more of that messiness before he meets Tessa, and how that experience changes him,” Landon revealed. Since the movie shows a younger version of Hardin, After series Hero Fiennes Tiffin will not reprise the role.
The next-generation sequel will focus on Tessa and Hardin’s children, Emery and Auden, and their cousin Addy. The new characters originally appeared in the final book of the series, After Ever Happy.
“Emery, Auden, and Addy are quite beloved by the fans. We’ve all gotten a lot of inquiries about what happens with the kids,” Landon says. “It’s really amazing actually to see how interested the fanbase is in those characters, even though they are really only superficially introduced in the books. People have latched onto them because of their love for Hardin and Tessa.”
While Tessa and Hardin will return as characters, due to the time jump, Hero and Josephine Langford won’t be back to play them.
“It was really bittersweet because obviously, it was sad finishing it,” Josephine previously told Seventeen about the end of the series. “It doesn’t really feel like it’s over of it yet. I haven’t accepted it. I think that’s because the film just hasn’t come out, but yeah bittersweet.”
Both films will shoot back to back later this year with casting and details set to come soon.
Fans won’t have wait long to see Hardin and Tessa back on their screens though. The upcoming sequel, After We Fell, is set to be released later in 2021
