There have been many TV shows that have managed to survive the chopping block and overturn an initial cancellation decision. However, very few have managed to avoid an early demise more times than S.W.A.T. But, after eight seasons, the CBS hit is now at an end, although there is the spin-off series starring Shemar Moore, entitled S.W.A.T.: Exiles, for fans to look forward to. Before that, though, Netflix subscribers will finally get to add Season 8 of the flagship show to their bingewatch list as it joins the streamer on September 15 with the previous seven seasons.
S.W.A.T. is based on the 1970 procedural of the same name, which was remade in 2003 as a movie, and ran for six seasons before being axed by CBS for the first time. Fans were outraged, Moore shared his feelings that the series had more life in it, and somewhere in the middle, the network decided to give the show a “final” seventh season. While that was meant to be the end – again – for the show, the plug was set to be pulled again, and the show had mostly wrapped up its storylines to ensure no cliffhangers were left forever dangling. But, Season 8 happened, and then, the inevitable cancellation came again, this time, for good.
Yet, even then, S.W.A.T. just refused to lay down and die, and no sooner had the end of the show been confirmed, a spinoff came along. S.W.A.T.: Exiles was announced, with Moore the only former cast member currently confirmed to be reprising his role as LAPD Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, although it has been hinted that there will be more familiar faces dropping in on the 10-episode series.
‘S.W.A.T.’ Fans Can Get Their Fill on Netflix This September
For anyone who does not know, S.W.A.T. centers on Hondo and the Twenty Squad, combining a case-of-the-week staging with ongoing personal story arcs among its regular cast. Although S.W.A.T. will continue in its new form soon enough, having the entire eight seasons of the flagship show in the same place will mean that those who have either not yet seen how the show’s final season played out, or simply want to relive it, will be able to work their way through any season they wish.
S.W.A.T. was not always the best-reviewed series on TV, but its final seasons did deliver some of the best Rotten Tomatoes scores. Season 7 landed a 74% score, while the final eighth season only had two reviews, both of which are positive.
There is no doubt that the arrival of S.W.A.T. Season 8 will see the show gain a new surge in interest, and it could even find itself circling the top of the chart. Fans may even be inclined to go right back to the beginning and work their way through the whole series while they await the spinoff’s arrival. That spinoff comes with the synopsis:
“After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Hondo is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”
So it sounds like Exiles will certainly be bringing more of the same action that sustained S.W.A.T. for almost a decade. For Moore himself, he is looking forward to continuing his journey as Hondo very much, as he said in his statement, which read, “We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony.”
