The 2016 Razzie Awards Hate Fifty Shades of Grey and It’s Just Not Fair

The Razzies is throwing all kinds of shade at the erotic film.
Every year, while most awards shows focus on honoring the best the last 12 months had to offer, one ceremony singles out the worst — the Razzies, which announced its nominations on Wednesday. Unfortunately, our most-anticipated movie of 2015, Fifty Shades of Grey, leads the pack, and we’re left scratching our heads.

It’s a four-way tie for most Razzie nominations this time around with Fifty Shades of Grey, Pixels, Jupiter Ascending and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 racking up six nominations each. The steamy adaptation of E. L. James’ 2011 novel earned nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Jamie Dornan), Worst Actress (Dakota Johnson), Worst Director (Sam Taylor-Johnson), Worst Screen Combo (Dornan and Johnson together) and Worst Screenplay (Kelly Marcel).

While we weren’t expecting Fifty Shades to be contending for top honors at the Oscars, this nevertheless feels a tad harsh.

For one thing, Dornan and Johnson turned in solid performances. True, they didn’t seem to have the exact chemistry we were looking for onscreen, but their individual performances weren’t bad.

As far as the directing goes, seeing as how the sex scenes were the best parts of the movie — and rightfully so — we have to give Taylor-Johnson a passable grade on the film as well.

And let’s not forget it was the fastest-selling R-rated film of all time! That has to count for something.Thankfully, in the midst of this bleak news, the Razzies do offer something positive in the form of the Razzie Redeemer Award, which acknowledges past Razzie winners who made a comeback in the past year. This year, Elizabeth Banks, M. Night Shyamalan, Will Smith and Sylvester Stallone were chosen for a chance at redemption.
