According to co-showrunner Steven Molaro, the creative team deliberately avoided assigning Penny a surname. Even props that appeared to reveal it—like labels reading “Penny Teller” or “Penny London”—were never meant to be taken seriously.
The decision reflects Penny’s early role in the series. Initially introduced as the “girl next door,” her character wasn’t as fully developed as her scientist neighbors. Although she later grew into a more complex figure, some gaps—like her missing last name—remained.
