Station 19 Season 7 Episode 5: The Emotional Rollercoaster You Didn’t See Coming

Welcome to Station 19 , that series that’s coming to an end and has us crying because they’re giving us roughly half a minute of Maya and Carina ‘s story development . Seriously, Shonda? First you destroy Callie and Arizona ‘s relationship , and now this? We really like suffering.

The fifth episode of the show’s seventh season is largely dedicated to Andy, as this is the episode in which she finally earns her captain’s stripes. But just like in Station 19, it won’t be easy. Especially since the entire station is in depression mode after last shift, where everything went wrong. The only one in a good mood is Maya, and that’s because she didn’t work that shift.

The poor blonde tries to cheer up the staff by showing them pictures of Liam in his “new guy on the team” jumpsuit , but no, there’s no way. The team is dead. So the next step is to run into Beckett on the stairs and apologize for giving him the bottle. He’s really surprised, but tells her it’s all water under the bridge now, they’re fine.

So Maya stops by Andy’s office and finds her in a complete funk, because having to see dead children and then having an adult die on your own is horrible, and on the day she should be happiest, she feels like she’s failing as a captain.

Maya reminds him that her father, while one of the firefighters she’s most admired in the universe, wasn’t a perfect captain either . Unfortunately, things aren’t always going to go their way, and they have to learn to live with that. The best thing she can do is learn from what happened and improve.

Andy thanks her for always being there supporting her and asks her to please be the one to give him the honor , and it’s a very nice moment between the two.

Next, we see Maya talking on the phone with Carina, who’s at her doctor’s appointment to begin fertility treatment with Liam. Maya is sad that she can’t go with her, but the brunette reminds her that it’s just the first appointment and it’s more for informational purposes. She also tells her that she’ll surely be at all the important ones. But for Maya, absolutely all of them are important, so she asks her to please call her as soon as she gets out so she can tell her everything.

So, dressed to the nines and ready for action, the ceremony begins, but of course, halfway through the alarm goes off, so there’s no time to pin Andy’s stripes on the scene because the emergency is major. There’s a fire at Seattle’s Space Needle . Yes, the city’s iconic tourist attraction, packed with tourists and 184 meters tall.

Meanwhile, Carina is driving back looking for parking with a crying Liam when a driver tries to pass her and ends up crashing into another car. Carina gets out of the car to call emergency services and checks that no one in the car is hurt, but yes, there’s a boy with an open fracture, and her sister can’t move her arm. The driver she passed asks if he can do anything, and the Italian woman asks him to please look after Liam so she can concentrate. He replies that he doesn’t know anything about children, but when she asks him, “What about open fractures?” he goes to the car to look after him.

Carina uses a diaper to stop the bleeding , and by the time the paramedics arrive, she has the situation more or less under control, so they take charge of getting everyone out of the car. When they get the boy out, Carina notices his arm is blue, so the blood isn’t flowing from the break, which means she needs to set the bone now or she could lose it. So, without anesthesia, it’s up to the Malaga native to set it.

Everything goes well, so Carina runs out to see Liam, who, the son of a doctor mother and a firefighter mother, is fast asleep in the middle of the emergency. Of course, dealing with the brothers’ accident reminds her of her deceased brother Andrea. And she tells the baby she wishes he could have met him.

Meanwhile, Maya is struggling at work because she’s been paired with Beckett, and the guy isn’t taking it easy. In fact, he jumps off the cliff like it’s nothing, without making sure Maya’s hooked, and he almost dies. I felt like killing him!

Things get really difficult because Sullivan and Ben get trapped in a practically inaccessible place, and both of them are already losing consciousness, so everyone’s nervous because they don’t see any way to reach them and are probably going to die. In any other series, this would be a no-brainer, but this is Shonda’s show; she kills off protagonists for fun. So, be nervous until the very end.

But no, everything goes well and they manage to reach them thanks to Andy.

Once they’re all packed up, Beckett apologizes to Maya , telling her he thought she wasn’t going to save him because of everything that had happened between them, but now he knows he can trust her and regrets not having done so. Maya tells him he’s on her team, and that despite their differences, she’ll always look out for him and support him.

The night is going terribly because the politicians decided to cut Vic’s program to protect his mental health, but of course, when it comes time to take credit for solving problems, they’re the first to show up. So Vic loses his temper and goes public with the idea that they’ve cut his program, and all hell breaks loose.

Everyone arrives at the station tired and scared from having had a terrible time, so Maya decides to go straight to her room to rest and there she finds Maya and Liam waiting for her in bed.

The blonde almost has a heart attack when she realizes that Carina’s shirt is covered in blood , but Carina immediately assures her that they are both fine and that nothing is wrong.

Carina takes her hands and tells her the test went wrong, that her eggs aren’t viable, and therefore she can’t get pregnant. They won’t be able to have a biological baby.

Maya: I’m so sorry, Carina… We have Liam.
Carina: Yes, but we don’t even know if they’re going to let us keep him. I’m so sorry! I put you through all of this, and now Liam’s not going to have a brother, and you didn’t even want kids in the first place.
Maya: Stop! Stop… I didn’t want to have a family until you showed me what family was like… What about my eggs? Could you get pregnant with my eggs? Let’s try.
Carina: Let’s try.

It’s a very beautiful moment for the two of them, especially because I think this conversation makes it very clear how much Maya has evolved thanks to Carina. That her perspective on life has changed because she now knows what it’s like to have a stable family and someone who loves you and always looks out for the best for you. Instead of the version of family she had thanks to all the abuse her father put them through.

The episode ends with everyone dressed up, celebrating Andy finally receiving his stripes, thanks to Maya, of course. We’re almost there before the end of the series. Honestly, they’re rushing the storylines a bit, and Maya and Carina only have half a minute of the episode, but what can you do? See you around here to talk about the next episode of Station 19.
