Station 19 Season 3, Episode 5 Recap: Maya & Carina’s Journey ‘Into the Woods’

Hello everyone! Are you ready to meet a wonderful new couple? Well, today I’m here to talk about none other than Maya and Carina from Station 19 , the spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy.

But first of all I will give you some background:

Maya Bishop is the first woman to reach the position of captain at Seattle Fire Station 19 and the youngest to achieve this. She also won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Maya is bisexual, very disciplined and a bit of a workaholic, but although she may seem cold, we soon discover that she has a big heart.

Carina DeLuca , many of you will know her because she’s been on Grey’s Anatomy for a few seasons and was in a relationship with our beloved Arizona Robbins , but just in case some of you don’t, I’ll give you the corresponding introduction: Carina is a gynecologist and obstetrician at Grey Sloan Hospital. She came to the hospital from Italy to conduct a study on the female orgasm. Cheerful, fun, and extremely resilient.

And now, let’s get started! Our episode begins with Sullivan, the unit chief of the Seattle Fire Department, running. The next scene shows Maya at the fire station, giving orders and training her colleagues.

Suddenly we travel back in time, specifically to 2006, where we see a very young Maya in an athletics race. While she is running, her father shouts at her from the stands to go faster and try to be the first to cross the finish line. Maya succeeds and her father goes to hug her.

We return to the present, where we see Pruitt Herrera, former captain of Park 19, meeting Maya on the steps outside the park. Pruitt asks our captain if she’s hiding from her team. Maya has just been promoted to captain, and most of her teammates aren’t happy with how she got there. To give you a sense of context, Maya was promoted to lieutenant in the second season, and although she didn’t initially plan on being promoted, Sullivan encourages her.

Maya is a person who, due to the way she has been raised, is used to competing and going for more, so in this third season she decides to fight to be captain and achieves it, the fact is that she does it behind Andy’s back. Andy is the protagonist of the series, also a firefighter, daughter of Pruitt, lieutenant and Maya’s best friend, but this friendship suffered in the second season when Maya started dating Jack (Andy’s ex) and although now the captain is no longer with him, the friendship breaks down completely when Maya is promoted to this position because she also wanted it.

That said we continue with the scene, Pruitt tells her that promotions can be tough at first, then asks if she knows how Andy is, that he can’t get her to talk to him since Ryan died, her ex-boyfriend and good friend, Maya tells him that she has no idea because Andy left home a week ago and doesn’t talk to her because he accuses her of stealing his job, Pruitt then recommends that she take the team camping so they can spend some quality time together and bond.

The team is in the park kitchen preparing food and Maya comes in asking to wait on them for a moment. The captain tells them that they are going camping and does everything she can to make the idea appealing to them, but they don’t like it at all.

Then we see them all in the park getting ready to go camping, while Maya is in her office looking out the window and pensive, then she sends a WhatsApp to her father telling him that she is taking her camping team and to wish him luck, her father replies that she is the captain and that she should not let them get on her, Maya smiles.

Afterwards, he leaves his office, cheering on the team, but everyone looks at him with a sour face, except for Vic, who does his best to put on a happy face even though he doesn’t feel like going camping.

Once in the forest, they get out of the vans and Andy asks Maya where they are camping, the captain tells him that it is five kilometers away, Dean asks her if they have to walk that distance with everything they have to carry, Maya answers yes and that they should not stay behind.

In the next scene we see how they go into the forest and a couple who are camping there invite them to coffee, but Maya tells them that thanks but they have to continue on their way.

Once they arrive at the place where they are going to camp, Maya begins to give them orders on where each one has to set up the tent, but they ignore her and tell her that they know where to set it up themselves. Maya looks at Pruitt with a slightly sad smile and he gestures to indicate that she is doing well, but he is not very convinced.

Maya is carrying a notebook with notes and while she looks at what she has written down she is checking that everything is in order. Pruitt asks her what she has written down, Maya replies that it is the plan for that day and that they are 20 minutes late. Pruitt tells her that they have come to have fun, Maya says that they hate her, that she used to be their friend and now she is their boss and they can’t stand her, but Pruitt tells her that they don’t hate her because she is their boss but because she doesn’t let go of the notebook. Maya agrees and puts down the notebook but instead of relaxing she starts blowing a whistle that she wears around her neck to demand the team’s attention and tells them that they are going to light the fire as a team, Vic tells her that she thought they were going to relax and get to know each other a little more, Maya is left thinking and suddenly we see another flashback of her past.

In it we see her father entering Maya’s room while she is lying in bed, her father asks her what she thinks she is doing and Maya tells him that she was sleeping, her father tells her that she has to train and Maya doesn’t understand why, since she won the last race, but he tells her that winners win because they don’t stop training, Maya wants to stay in bed and her father throws a bucket of water on her to get her up.

We return to the present, where they are all around a bonfire except Maya who is sitting alone and away from the group and then a new flashback appears in which Maya is on the athletics track stretching, a teammate approaches her and tells her that she never gives up, the girl is called Hima and invites her to eat pizza with the rest of the team but Maya can’t because her father has put her on a strict diet, Hima tells her that her father is a little scary and although Maya tries to defend him she ends up admitting that it is true that sometimes he is scary, Hima tells her that if her father lets her go to the movies and Maya says that she can go when she finishes stretching.

We then return to the present, the team is still around the bonfire and Maya is away, then Jack asks her if the fun is mandatory or they can leave now, Pruitt defends her and tells them to please give her a break.

Maya approaches the group and suggests doing an exercise that consists of picking up a pine cone, saying something nice about a classmate and then passing the pine cone to that classmate so that he can say something nice about another and so on, Maya tells Dean that he is very good at security, he mocks and sarcastically tells her that she has touched his heart, Maya passes the pine cone to Andy, but she totally passes it and it is Pruitt who ends up taking it and tells his daughter that he thanks her for taking care of his health, he passes it back to Andy and she throws it into the bonfire.

We find ourselves back in the past, Hima and Maya are in the latter’s room studying, Hima offers her a cookie but Maya rejects it, Hima tells her that if her father does nothing but force her to train, Maya defends her and says that there are fathers who do not go to their daughters’ races and that hers is always there for her. Hima says that it’s nice but that life is more than running and training and then asks her if she has a favorite music group, a movie or a series, but Maya doesn’t have an answer for any of those questions and then the following happens:

Hima: Tell me you’re at least crazy about someone famous.
Maya: I do have a crush, but it’s not someone famous.

Hima immediately knows he’s talking about her, and then they kiss. They’re so cute!

Back in the present it is already day and everyone is in their tents when they hear someone asking for help, everyone leaves their tents and runs to see what has happened, it turns out that the couple that appeared at the beginning of the chapter has been attacked by a bear and the team begins to help them and notify the emergency services, Maya as a good captain begins to give orders.

Maya and Andy are searching among the bushes for the nose of the man who has been attacked by the bear, apparently it has been ripped off by the roots, Andy rudely tells him that the next time his father suggests something to take them to a water park, Maya becomes thoughtful and another flashback appears.

In the Flashback Hima and Maya are competing, Maya is winning and then Hima hurts her foot, so Maya instead of continuing to run goes to help her and Hima tells her to keep running. Maya comes second and her father is very angry .

In the present, Maya and Andy continue searching through the bushes and then a baby bear appears and immediately afterward the big bear, then Pruitt and Jack arrive, the four of them stand in front of the bear and Andy tells them not to move, after a while of anguish the bear leaves.

Eva, the wife of one of the firefighters named Vasquez, sees blood and alerts the team, Maya runs to where she is and finds the nose, she picks it up and puts it in a plastic bag and Pruitt tells her to run with her nose to where the ambulance is because it is very possible that Warren and Avery are about to leave for the hospital, so Maya starts running.

As Maya runs, flashbacks to the past are interspersed, showing Maya having dinner with her parents and brother. Since Maya didn’t win the race, her father ignores her and starts talking to her brother Mason, whom he’s ignoring because he can’t finish first in a race and because his passion is art. Her father tells him in a few words that he’s a failure. Maya tries to cheer him up by telling him she’ll go see his exhibition, but her father gets angry and ends up throwing his plate of chips against the wall.

When Maya arrives the ambulance is no longer there and they all leave in the van to get the nose back on time. In the van Pruitt tells Andy that he is sorry for having behaved so badly with her in the last few days and then they focus on Maya, she is seen sad for not having had a father like Pruitt and for everything that has happened to her in this chapter.

Then we see Travis, also a firefighter and another of the LGBT characters in the series, in front of a bonfire with Pruitt. Pruitt tells him that he’s worried about Andy because there’s something he wants to tell him but he can’t, so Travis asks him if he wants to talk to him about it, and Pruitt tells him that he has cancer and is dying. Travis starts to cry.

Andy and Jack are having a drink at Joe’s bar and Maya arrives and instead of sitting at the table with them, goes straight to the bar.

Then we see another flashback where Maya is competing and wins the race, her father goes to congratulate her and then Hima approaches to do the same but Maya ignores her and we see her walking away with her father while Hima looks at them.

Carina DeLuca appears back at the bar ! She sits at the bar next to Maya and orders white wine. Carina stares at Maya, and the following conversation ensues:

Carina: Your face really looks familiar.
Maya: I come here a lot.
Carina: No, I’ve seen you at the hospital before.
Maya: Yeah, right. I’m a firefighter. I went… to deliver something.
Carina: That’s right! Yes! You’re the one who ran with her nose!
Maya: Yeah.
Carina: Wow!
Maya: Captain Maya Bishop.
Carina: Dr. Carina DeLuca, hey, if I buy you a drink, will you tell me how you ended up running with your nose in a plastic bag?
Maya: Sorry. I feel like drinking alone.
Carina: Okay, are you sure?
Maya: (staring at her) Maybe not.

And that’s it for today’s episode! As you can see, it’s been a complicated episode for Maya, but seeing how her childhood and adolescence were, we can understand her personality a little better. The episode ended wonderfully for her because she met the woman of her life! Even though she doesn’t know it yet.
