Station 19 Recap – Episode 3×07: Maya & Carina’s Relationship Tested Like Never Before

Hello! How are you? Ready for another episode of Station 19? Well, let’s get going because this episode is going to be a big one!

We start with the firemen and firewomen of Station 19 having a good time in bed, each with their respective partner or roll, the first ones we see are Andy and Jack, the image changes to Maya and Carina ! Carina is under the sheets and when we finally see her, they have this conversation:

Maya: It’s a way to get to know me.
Carina: I think it’s the fastest way.

They kiss and continue on with their business. Then the image changes to Travis, who’s in the shower with a guy whose name we still don’t know. The only one who isn’t having a good time is Vic; when she wakes up, her boyfriend Jackson isn’t with her.

Dean and JJ aren’t having a better time either; being first-time parents is quite complicated, and they haven’t even given the girl a name yet.

The next day, everyone’s already at the park, and Maya starts ordering them around. Then she tells Jack and Vasquez to go to her office. It turns out Jack slept with Eva (Vasquez’s wife), and how did they settle it? Well, with blows, like the two of them. Maya wants to talk to them because she wants to know if they’re going to be able to work together. The captain tells them she has the authority and won’t tell Sullivan and Dixon, who are her superiors. Maya wants them to apologize, and Jack does, but Vasquez isn’t up for it.

Then everyone goes to see the truck Warren will be working in (for those who watch Grey’s Anatomy, he’s Bailey’s husband, but he got tired of working in the hospital and is now a doctor and firefighter). A truck that’s equipped to handle emergencies, like an ambulance but more sophisticated. The firefighter also introduces his future assistant, who is none other than Pruitt.

Later, Dixon, the chief of the Seattle Fire Department, introduces his son, Emmett, who will be the new firefighter at Park 19. And guess who? Well, the guy who was in the shower with Travis, who is shocked when he sees him arrive.

Warren is in his new ambulance explaining to Pruitt what his job will be, and then a call comes in to put out a fire that looks like it was caused by a plane crash, so everyone starts getting ready.

The firefighters arrive at the scene of the accident, which to make matters worse, is at a gas station. Maya starts giving orders (I love it when she does that, I have to admit). Once there, they realize that the supposedly crashed plane is nowhere to be seen, and Andy lets Maya know, but the captain tells him that they have to take care of closing the gas leak. Of course, the emergency stop is broken, and they can’t prevent the leak that way, and right next to it there’s a huge truck, so the disaster could be even bigger. So they try to look for the truck driver, but he’s nowhere to be seen.

So they place a kind of inflatable pool right where the leak is and the fire starts to spread through the pool, Andy is constantly questioning Maya and she tells him to take care of turning off the small lights and to stop questioning her.

They start spraying foam with hoses into the pool to control the fire, but if the leak doesn’t stop, it’ll be impossible to stop the fire. So Vic volunteers to go slowly over the foam and clamp the tube to stop the leak. Maya agrees, and Travis gives her a sour look.

Vic starts to slowly go through the foam and everyone is very tense in case something happens to him, the firefighter manages to successfully stop the leak, but this is Station 19 and there had to be some scares. So when she returns to where Maya and Travis are, fire starts coming out of the foam and catches his suit on fire, so the captain tells him to run towards them and Travis throws foam all over his suit, luckily they stop the fire in time and nothing happens to Vic.

Maya tells them the fire is out and they’ve done a good job, but it’s not really over. Vasquez and Jack continue arguing. Meanwhile, Andy discovers some metal pieces and one of the victims they’re treating asks him what that is. Andy says he doesn’t know, but it doesn’t look like airplane wreckage. Thanks to the woman he’s talking to, he discovers there’s a technology center nearby where they apparently have the goal of going to Mars and that it’s actually a rocket. Andy starts contacting Jack by radio, but since he’s arguing with Vasquez, neither of them notices, and there’s an explosion. Vasquez comes out the worst off, and they have to perform emergency surgery in Warren’s new ambulance.

Emmett, who skipped the fire because he didn’t get there in time to get on the trucks, spent the episode with a homeless man who had sneaked into the park. When he went to tell Sullivan, he didn’t respond because he was unconscious on the ground. It turns out the unit chief had been taking a drug for a few episodes because he was experiencing severe pain in one of his legs due to an injury he sustained on an emergency exit. So the new firefighter went in, saw the scene, and tried to help him.

The ones arguing now are Maya and Andy because Andy tries to warn the captain that what has crashed is a rocket and not a plane, Maya doesn’t pay much attention because she wants to know what happened to Vasquez, Andy continues questioning her and tells her that if she doesn’t call an emergency team she will do it, in the end Maya reluctantly listens to Andy and gives the warning.

When they arrive at the park, Andy again questions Maya for putting Jack and Vasquez together, but Jack tells him that this time it’s not Maya’s fault. Andy doesn’t back down and says that it’s all the captain’s fault, so Maya, fed up with everything and everyone, tells them that they’ve been insubordinate and that they’ve questioned all her decisions and that if they don’t like her being their boss, they should ask for a transfer. In the end, Jack says that it’s all his own fault.

At one point, Travis and Emmett are alone together. Travis tells her he didn’t know she was a firefighter, and Emmett tells him he didn’t ask either. Maya is in her office, and who pays her a visit? Carina!

Maya: (sulky face) What are you doing here?
Carina: (her usual cheerful face) I saw Warren at the hospital and he said it’s been a rough day, so I brought you lasagna.
Maya: You can’t just show up.
Carina: Warren told me that…
Maya: You’re hot, but we’re just making out. I don’t want a girlfriend.
Carina: (surprised by Maya’s reaction) Oh! Okay. Sorry. Nice to meet you.

Then Carina starts to leave but Maya runs to the door to stop her:

Maya: I’m sorry. I’ve been…
Carina: Rude?
Maya: I’m broken.
Carina: I’m not in the business of fixing broken people.
Maya: It’s… I understand.

Maya opens the door to let Carina out but then they stare at each other and the doctor closes the door and says, “Come here” and they start kissing.

It’s a scene I really like because you start to see the effect Carina has on Maya, the firefighter is a tough person who is always on guard, at first she resists Carina’s kindness but then regrets it and tries to fix it, Carina is the only person with whom Maya allows herself to be vulnerable, we will see this throughout the chapters.

Dean and JJ, who have been dealing with parenting the entire episode, are talking about what might be best for raising the girl and while Dean is talking JJ starts packing and suddenly appears with a suitcase. At first the firefighter thinks he’s going to leave with the girl but it’s quite the opposite. JJ tells him that she’s sure he’ll be a good father but that she’s not cut out for this.

And so ends this chapter, in which we saw some progress in Maya and Carina’s relationship. I hope you enjoyed it! See you next week!
