Star Wars: Yoda Just Made The Last Jedi’s Most Ridiculous Moment Even More Ludicrous
Darth Vader once said, “The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.” The Dark Lord made that comment in A New Hope, when the world was just being introduced to Star Wars. So, it might have sounded like hyperbole, but the franchise has repeatedly shown Vader was right about the Force. Over the years, Jedi and Sith have put their powers on display and performed all kinds of impressive feats.
Star Wars fans know that all kinds of outlandish things are possible when the Force is involved. However, there was one thing that no one could get behind, and that was Princess Leia flying through space in The Last Jedi. Now, Star Wars itself is actually poking fun at that moment. It happened in Yoda #5 (by Jody Houser, Luke Ross, Nolan Woodard, VC’s Joe Caragagna, and Phil Noto).
Even Yoda Couldn’t Fly in Space Without a Ship
Star Wars Yoda Traveling through space story
The Yoda comic series is set during Yoda’s exile, and it’s showing different memories from his long life. The first few issues were from the High Republic, but the comic’s current arc tells a memory about Yoda, Dooku, and a group of younglings. During Yoda #5, Yoda took the group of younglings on a field trip to Corvair II. Then, after Yoda got the Younglings settled, he quietly disappeared. Recently, a Wookiee padawan, named Krrsish, had been having repeated visions of a Trandoshan Youngling turning to the dark side. At Dooku’s suggestion, Krrsish hadn’t told Yoda about his visions (because the Jedi Master didn’t trust visions), and the issue ended by teasing a heated confrontation between the two Younglings. With Yoda not around, things could get ugly, but that wasn’t the best part of the issue. The best part was a stray comment by a random Youngling.
Just after Yoda left the group, a few of the Younglings became worried. One of them said that the Yoda might have abandoned them for good. To validate his suggestion, the Youngling told a story that he’d heard. He suggested that the strongest Jedi Masters didn’t need ships to travel through space. So, Yoda could have left them without anyone knowing it. The rest of the group was confident that Yoda hadn’t abandoned them. However, the conversation was a bit deeper than that. They also suggested that the idea of someone floating through space was a bit farfetched, even for the great Yoda. Clearly, the story was nothing more than a tall tale, dreamed up in fear.
Star Wars Poked Fun at Princess Leia’s Mary Poppins Moment
Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Last Jedi
For Star Wars fans, the brief remark was a bit of subtle commentary. Princess Leia made waves when she floated through space like Mary Poppins in The Last Jedi. Some people tried to validate the scene, but it was largely viewed as a flop. The idea of anyone floating through the vacuum of space, while unconscious, was pretty out there. At that point in the story, fans weren’t aware that Leia had trained as a Jedi at all, so the idea that she could unconsciously call on the Force and save herself didn’t vibe with a lot of people. In Star Wars, some characters are naturally strong with the Force, but using it and controlling it take years and years of practice.
For example, Legends Luke Skywalker is largely believed to be the most powerful Jedi ever. However, he couldn’t even lift his X-Wing out of the Dagobah swamp during The Empire Strikes Back. He simply hadn’t awakened his powers enough to use them effectively. He had to train with Yoda, quiet the distractions and learn how to focus. That’s why Princess Leia’s Mary Poppins moment didn’t work. Sure, it looked ridiculous, but the main problem was that she didn’t have the training to accomplish that type of feat. In Legends, there were a few times when a powerful Force user could briefly make a cocoon around themselves to survive in Space. However, the fact that Star Wars is now poking fun at the moment is an obvious callback to a sillier moment in Star Wars history.
