Star Wars fans know that Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala were lovers and were secretly married. The secrecy of their relationship was grounded on the fact that Anakin was a Jedi and that Padmé was a senator. Of course, we know that this relationship led to the birth of Luke and Leia, who both became heroes of the galaxy. But where and when did Anakin and Padmé get married?
Anakin and Padmé got married on 22 BBY and just shortly after the conclusion of the First Battle of Geonosis and the start of the Clone Wars. Because they wanted the wedding to be a secret, they got married on Padmé’s home planet of Naboo, which was away from the eyes of the Jedi and the Republic.
Let’s not forget that Naboo is one of the most important planets in the entire Star Wars storyline because this was where both Padmé and Palpatine were from and was one of the planets that were heavily featured during the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. And the fact that Anakin and Padmé got married on that planet just after the start of the Clone Wars says something about the urgency and secrecy of their wedding.
When Did Anakin and Padmé Get Married?
There is no doubt that true Star Wars fans are aware of the relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, as they both ended up getting married. This marriage led to the births of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, who both ended up defeating the Empire during the time of the Rebellion. And the prequel trilogy movies expanded on the story of Anakin’s relationship with Padmé.
Did Anakin Kill Padme? How Did She Die & What Killed Her Exactly?
Of course, Anakin met Padmé on Tatooine when he was nine. At that time, Padmé was secretly the queen of Naboo and was already 14. Anakin went on to help the people of Naboo defeat the Trade Federation and was trained to become a Jedi by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Padmé was asked to continue to serve Naboo as a senator.
It took ten years for them to see each other again, as Anakin was still clearly in love with Padmé, who he fell for back when they first met. This happened during Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones when Anakin was asked to become the bodyguard of Padmé, whose life was in danger due to an assassination attempt.
Anakin went on to accompany Padmé to Naboo, where she was safer from the assassins looking to eliminate her due to her political views. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi investigated the assassination attempt on Padmé. On Naboo, Anakin and Padmé could become closer to one another, as it was clear that they had feelings for each other. But their time on Naboo was cut short when Obi-Wan sent out a distress signal regarding the plot of the Separatists on Geonosis.
As such, Anakin and Padmé both went to Geonosis to try to rescue Kenobi, only for them to get in danger as well. Count Dooku, the leader of the Separatists, was looking to execute Anakin, Padmé, and Obi-Wan in front of a live audience by letting them fight ferocious beasts. And before Anakin and Padmé were sent out to fight the monsters, they admitted their love for one another.
Thanks to the efforts of the Jedi and the arrival of the clones, the lives of Anakin, Padmé, and Obi-Wan were spared as they went on to take part in the First Battle of Geonosis. Anakin and Obi-Wan lost a duel to Count Dooku, who took away Skywalker’s hand. But while Dooku emerged victorious in his duel with Skywalker and Kenobi, he had to flee when it was clear he wouldn’t defeat Yoda.
The First Battle of Geonosis was in favor of the Republic. However, this battle also sparked the Clone Wars, which started on 22 BBY. Anakin and Padmé eventually got married shortly after the conclusion of the First Battle of Geonosis. That means they were married on 22 BBY, just days or weeks after the First Battle of Geonosis and the start of the Clone Wars.
Where Did Anakin and Padmé Get Married?
While it may be true that Anakin and Padmé were madly in love with one another, let’s not forget that their love was forbidden. The Jedi Code forbade Anakin from falling in love with someone due to how attachments were seen as gateways to the dark side of the Force. On the other hand, Padmé was a public figure due to her status as a senator. As such, they couldn’t love one another in public as this was considered taboo.
In that regard, Anakin and Padmé returned to Naboo after the First Battle of Geonosis to get married in secret. This wedding was held in private, as there were no other people around except for the one that administered their wedding. Of course, both C-3PO and R2-D2 were there to witness their wedding, as Anakin and Padmé trusted the droids well enough to have them around.
It was clear that they had to conduct the wedding on Naboo because this planet was Padmé’s turf, as she was from Naboo and was a high-ranking official. That means she could easily pull some strings to ensure this wedding would never become public. If they had chosen to get married on Coruscant, word of their relationship would quickly reach other politicians and the Jedi Order.
Nevertheless, after getting married on Naboo, Anakin and Padmé returned to Coruscant to resume their normal lives while secretly seeing each other in Padmé’s home on the capital planet of the Republic. Anakin had to continue his life as a Jedi Knight, while Padmé continued her life as a politician.
