Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 Will Feature Boba Fett
Fans hoping to see Boba Fett on screen again after his demise in Return of the Jedi almost four decades ago are finally getting what they wished for: the galaxy’s most infamous bounty hunter will appear in The Mandalorian season 2. According to THR, Temuera Morrison will portray Boba Fett, who will “play just a small role” in the second season of the Star Wars live-action series.
Morrison previously played Jango Fett, Boba’s father, in Attack of the Clones, and several clone troopers in Revenge of the Sith. The actor most recently voiced Boba in the last two Star Wars Battlefront video games, but this will be his first on-screen Star Wars project since the Prequel Trilogy. Morrison joins a season 2 cast that also includes Rosario Dawson (Daredevil) as Ahsoka Tano and Michael Biehn (Aliens) as a bounty hunter from the Mando’s past.
The character’s return shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. After all, Disney and Lucasfilm have been planning to bring back Boba since before The Mandalorian. In fact, Disney toyed with a Boba Fett standalone movie when it first bought Lucasfilm from George Lucas in 2012, and originally planned to announce a film starring the character with Fantastic Four‘s Josh Trank attached to direct, but the studio allegedly got cold feet at the last second.
The Boba Fett standalone project was later revived in 2018, with Logan director James Mangold tapped to helm the movie. That Star Wars Story was also put on ice after Solo‘s dismal performance at the box office that same year.
The Mandalorian, which stars a bounty hunter similar to Boba, is the logical choice for the character’s high-profile return. The show even teased as much in the final seconds of the season 1 episode “The Gunslinger,” which shows a mysterious figure reminiscent of Boba walking in the desert of Tatooine, the planet where the character first met his doom in the digestive system of a sarlacc.
This isn’t the first time Boba Fett has risen from the dead, either. In the Legends continuity, the bounty hunter survived his fate in Return of the Jedi and lived long after the events of the Original Trilogy, making many appearances in the books and comics thereafter.
It remains to be seen how The Mandalorian season 2 will handle Boba’s return and whether he will act as friend or foe to Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin. But if the character is indeed only playing a small role on the show, fans should probably expect a cameo or maybe an appearance in a single episode.
The Mandalorian season 2 is scheduled to premiere in October, but it remains to be seen how the coronavirus pandemic might affect that. Fortunately, the show wrapped shooting just before production shutdowns began. We’ll keep you updated.
