Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the ninth film in the Star Wars franchise (including eight films in the main storyline and one spin-off film – Rogue One). The new film’s content continues the plot of the blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). After discovering that she has The Force, heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) goes to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) – the legendary Jedi – to learn how to become a Jedi (a good knight who uses God). Force).

The resistance force under female general Leia (Carrie Fisher) – Luke’s twin sister – continues to fight back against the First Order, the brutal force that wants to take over the universe. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) – Leia’s son – sinks deeper into the Dark Side of the Force. Around the world, many viewers are looking forward to the movie to see the final performance of Carrie Fisher – the star who passed away late last year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi begins with a structure reminiscent of Star Wars: The Empire Strike Back (1980) – the most praised film of the series. The hero trains with a reclusive master, while the protagonist’s friends fight and flee from the enemy. However, as the script progresses, it reveals more surprises and details that deviate from viewers’ speculations.

Driven emotionally by John Williams’ soundtrack, the work is like an epic about the battle of two forces – light and darkness. The heroism is shown through the harsh fate of the characters, who are constantly put in the position of having to sacrifice themselves to serve the ideal. The interesting thing about the Star Wars series is that the important characters have complex inner thoughts, not just the simple good guy – bad guy motif. Rey is a strong heroine, but is also attracted to the forces of darkness, and has low self-esteem about her background. Luke is a legendary Jedi, but tormented by tradition and a past mistake to the point of becoming a doting old man.

Meanwhile, Kylo Ren has the most attractive personality in the film. When Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted, many viewers criticized this character for being too ugly, despite being the son of handsome pilot Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia. However, this is the filmmakers’ intention to build a villain different from the evil Darth Vader of the previous parts. Darth Vader was originally a famous Jedi who fell to the Dark Side due to arrogance, greed for power, and personal pain.

And Kylo Ren fell because of his feeling of inferiority compared to others. He does not have the pomp and charm of his father and the personality of his mother. The boy nurtured hidden inhibitions with his family and was gradually captivated by the Dark Side, viewing his grandfather – the evil Darth Vader – as his idol. However, even when pursuing this path, Kylo Ren still feels helpless because he lacks the brutality and qualifications like Vader. Even in The Force Awakens, he failed against Rey – who had just learned how to use the Force not long before.

Kylo Ren is not a powerful and distant person, but on the contrary has weak and very human reactions. He appeared to have everything under control but was constantly humiliated. He wants to become a great villain but still harbors kindness in his heart.

The character’s psychological repression and conflict are continued perfectly in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, pushed to a climax in a bold but appropriate decision.

The interactive scenes of Luke, Leia, Rey and Kylo Ren – with convincing performances from the four actors – are built quite seriously, with many features of a drama mixed with Eastern philosophy. Meanwhile, the story line of resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), black soldier Finn (John Boyega) and girl Rose Tico is fast-paced, with the familiar adventure color of the blockbuster Hollwyood. The spirit of fighting against oppression is woven quite well into this journey, constantly reminding the audience that the characters are fighting for a great cause.

In terms of images, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has two visually impressive scenes – one with a deep red tone in the background that evokes the feeling of a curtain in a play, one that takes place in outer space with a magical look, revolves around an important character. Excerpts of bombardment by planes, spaceships, and gun battles take place for a large amount of time in the film, creating the necessary majestic feeling of a space epic. However, Star Wars fans may not be satisfied because the new movie has quite a few light saber battle scenes, which is a characteristic of the series.

After the Star Wars brand was sold to Disney, The Last Jedi was installed with some funny and cute details common in this company’s films. Funny images and witty sayings appear quite often with the intention of reducing tension, but sometimes ruin the philosophical spirit of the film. They are more suitable for the Marvel Cinematic Universe than a series with a serious orientation from the beginning like Star Wars. Some details in the middle are quite lengthy, which can make viewers feel impatient while waiting for the ending.

In Vietnam, the work attracted attention with the participation of Ngo Thanh Van. The beauty plays Paige – a bomber pilot, appearing in an excerpt at the beginning of the film. The character has a fairly short duration (a few minutes) but still has space to act and show heroic spirit, exactly as she described. The presence of Ngo Thanh Van and Vietnamese actress Kelly Marie Tran (as Rose Tico – Paige’s younger sister) also reflects the message of racial and gender harmony of the Star Wars series over the decades.

The film premiered in Vietnam on December 15 with the title Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
