Star Power Incoming: ‘Matlock’ Showrunner Teases Big Guest Stars for Season 2

Matlock became a hot commodity after a successful first season. So hot, in fact, that actors started expressing interest in guest star roles once Season 2 entered production. “There are a lot of amazing actors who have expressed interest in coming onto the second season, which is always really exciting,” executive producer Kat Coiro previously told TV Insider after Melanie Lynskey expressed interest in a guest star spot. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman is focused on making Lynskey’s wish come true, along with some other special guest stars. “I’ve got a lot of plans!” she recently told TVLine.

Coiro said Matlock is “a slow drip,” meaning it doesn’t rely on flashy scenarios, instead building psychological connections to highly complex levels. This will continue in Season 2, which will deal with the fallout from the revelations in the Season 1 finale. The first season mirrored the challenges in the characters’ lives with its weekly cases. The subsequent season continues this trend as the characters enter another stage of their lives and relationships. This symbiosis enables the inclusion of powerful guest characters and, in turn, guest stars. P. Marshall explained:

“I think we’ll continue to do more cases [of the week] like the one we did about mold [Episode 4, titled “The Rabbit and the Hawk”]. People were like mold? I didn’t think a legal case about mold would be interesting, but it was. Also, we get such great guest stars that come in every episode that, you know, we get to explore so many criminal law procedures. I’ve learned a lot about class action suits and corporate law from this show.”
