Matlock was one of the best surprises of the 2024-25 TV season. At first, it looked to be just another entry in CBS’s annals of old TV shows being revived for a new generation. In this case, it was the old 1980s NBC series starring Andy Griffith as defense attorney Ben Matlock.
The new version had Oscar winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, an elderly woman rejoining the work force as a lawyer for Jacobson & Moore. Matty proved herself adept at using her age to stay under the radar and making folks underestimate her.
But the premiere ended with the twist that Matty was a rich woman whose daughter died of an opioid addiction. She was going undercover at the firm to find out who had buried files on such addictions and expose them.
That twist helped the series become an instant hit, earning a second season renewal quickly. It also won raves for Bates’ performance, with her earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series (making Bates the oldest Emmy acting nominee ever).

When does Matlock season 2 premiere?
CBS announced its 2024-25 schedule, which has some intriguing turns. As usual, they’re holding back some of their shows until October to get more eyes on them. In Matlock’s cast, it will premiere Sunday, Oct. 12 at 8:30/7:30c. It then moves to its regular timeslot of Thursdays at 9/8c on October 16.
The early premiere echoes how Matlock’s first episode aired on a Sunday after NFL games, getting major attention before the series began its regular run weeks later. This way, Matlock can use both NFL football and 60 Minutes to get eyes on it.
The first season ended on a dramatic note as Matlock’s ally, Olympia, discovered her ex-husband, Julian, was the one who buried the file and wrestled with what to do next. Meanwhile, Matty and her husband Edwin met what appeared to be the father of their grandchild, Alfie.
Fans are eager to see how this falls out and what’s next for Matty on her quest for justice. At least we now know the date for CBS to continue one of their best hit shows in years and more of Matty outwitting those before her.
