CBS has officially confirmed that Sonequa Martin-Green will star in Boston Blue, the upcoming drama expanding the universe of the long-running hit Blue Bloods. The actress, widely recognized for her acclaimed performance as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, will appear opposite Donnie Wahlberg, who reprises his iconic role as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan.
Developed by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, Boston Blue introduces a new family of law enforcement officers in Boston. Martin-Green takes on the role of Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent police family, now partnered with Danny Reagan following his relocation from New York. This pairing blends the established legacy of Blue Bloods with a fresh storyline set against a distinctly Boston backdrop.
The casting announcement was made during a CBS press briefing on Wednesday, where Wahlberg and Martin-Green presented the series to the press. “We love the Reagans. We’ve all loved the Reagans for so long,” Martin-Green said. “Being able to work with Danny Reagan in Boston Blue feels like a thrilling opportunity to introduce a new family to audiences. I’m so glad to be back with the CBS family.”
Interestingly, Boston Blue began not as a spinoff but as an original project titled Jamaica Plain, a Boston-set police drama pitched by Sonnier and Margolis. CBS soon recognized its potential to connect with the Blue Bloods universe, ultimately integrating Danny Reagan into the narrative and rebranding the show as an official extension of the franchise.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the years on Blue Bloods,” Wahlberg told reporters. “We’re working hard to make sure longtime fans are excited for what’s next, while also creating a new world with fresh characters and stories for new viewers to discover.”
Produced by CBS Studios in partnership with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, the series will be showrun by Sonnier and Margolis, who previously worked on S.W.A.T. They will also serve as executive producers alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg.
Since its 2010 debut, Blue Bloods has been a staple of American television, chronicling the Reagan family’s multigenerational commitment to law enforcement. Over 14 seasons, it earned a loyal global following, driven by strong performances from Tom Selleck as patriarch Frank Reagan and Wahlberg as Danny Reagan. While CBS has explored various spinoff concepts over the years, Boston Blue is the first to introduce an entirely new family while still carrying forward the Reagan legacy.
Martin-Green’s addition is seen as a milestone for the franchise. With her established success on Star Trek: Discovery and The Walking Dead, she brings both star power and depth to the role of Detective Peters—a determined officer with deep family roots in the Boston Police Department.
As Boston Blue gears up for its fall 2025 premiere, CBS is positioning the series as both a continuation of a beloved legacy and a fresh beginning. Fans can expect to follow Danny Reagan’s journey in a new city, while also discovering the powerful dynamics of the Peters family, ensuring that the heart of Blue Bloods beats on in a new era.
