CBS’ hit drama Tracker returns for a second season on October 13, and rightfully so. The second season will see survivor and parolee Colter Shaw, played by This Is Us alum Justin Hartley, return to the screen to solve complex mysteries, including one involving his family. The Shaw family has a mysterious past that has torn the family apart. Colter’s brother Russell Shaw (Jensen Ackles) was introduced in the first season, adding another layer of intrigue to the family dynamics. Ackles’ Russell will return for the second season, and series star and executive producer Hartley has previewed his return.
By the time the brothers met in the show’s first season, their relationship was very distant. However, the icy nature of that relationship will eventually thaw as they work to unravel the secrets of the disaster they brought upon their family. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hartley and showrunner Elwood Reid previewed what’s next for the Shaw brothers in season 2. The pair will reunite at a “culminating point” in a UFO-related case. A case that will also shed some light on Colter’s family drama. “There’s a secret that’s revealed about their father that both brothers know,” Reid said. “You’ll see that Colter doesn’t have the memories that his brother has about Colter and their father. Now that the brothers have a better relationship, they can actually compare notes and make some progress.” When Ackles was revealed to be joining the series, it added a little stardust to an already beloved show. The episode the brothers shared saw them enhance their strengths more than expose their weaknesses. Looking ahead to their on-screen reunion, Hartley added, “Jensen came in and he enhanced [the character] in every way. So he made this his own in a big way.”
While his personal life may be settling into calmer waters, Colter’s work life could be heading into a bit of a rougher patch in Season 2. Emmy-nominated actress Robin Weigert, who plays Teddi Bruin, will not be returning next season. This will mean a change in the stable that has kept Colter’s work going for much of the first season. While Teddi’s wife, Velma Bruin (Abby McEnany), will remain with Colter, showrunner Reid has revealed how the show plans to write Teddi off and what impact it will have on Velma and the gang. “[Velma] and Teddy have broken up,” Reid said. “Velma is struggling with what it means to be abandoned in some way, and she’s going to figure out how to work through that.” During Teddi’s absence, Fiona Rene’s Reenie will step in and work with Velma.
