The shocking moment between Matt and Eve in the Shifting Gears finale has been addressed by executive producer Michelle Nader. Season 1 of the hit ABC sitcom concluded with Tim Allen’s widowed mechanic sharing an unexpected kiss with Eve, played by Dharma & Greg alum Jenna Elfman. Introduced in episode 7 as the feisty owner of the dance studio across from Matt’s auto shop, Eve initially clashed with Matt over business rivalries. Their dynamic has since shifted, culminating in a moment that leaves major questions for Shifting Gears season 2.
In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Michelle Nader discussed how Matt and Eve’s kiss will influence Matt’s journey in a potential sophomore season. At her dance studio, Eve confessed to Matt that she dinged his car on purpose to get his attention before pulling the mechanic into a kiss. It was only a few weeks earlier that Matt was deep in mourning over the death of his wife, Diane. Read more of what she had to say below:
Yes to more Eve! We are so lucky to have Jenna in the show. And Eve and Matt are such unlikely animal friends. Their chemistry is very spicy so I am personally dying to see where this goes.
[We] weren’t sure if [the kiss] was too soon. But that is from Matt’s perspective. Eve is on a different timeline. Hers. And she’s impulsive. So she went in for the kiss.
Matt was very in love with his wife and was in a relationship for his whole life. Dating another woman is going to be hard for a guy like him. But yeah, he definitely is intrigued by Eve. How could he not be?
They are seemingly opposites, but they are both self-made business people with lots of integrity and strong core beliefs in what’s right and wrong. They are two sides of the same coin in some ways.
What This Means For Shifting Gears
There’s More Romance And Drama To Come For The ABC Sitcom
At the time of the Shifting Gears season 1 finale, ABC has yet to officially renew the series for a second season. Despite Shifting Gears‘ negative reviews, its record-high ratings make cancellation highly unlikely as the show has become ABC’s most successful sitcom since The Conners. Given Allen’s longstanding relationship with the network after leading Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, a renewal seems probable with Matt and Eve’s evolving dynamic poised to play a major role moving forward.
However, Elfman’s Eve isn’t Matt’s first potential love interest. Last Man Standing alum Nancy Travis guest-starred in Shifting Gears‘ episode 6 as Charlotte, a widow Matt meets at his late wife’s gravesite. While Charlotte and Matt definitely had chemistry, not unlike their roles as Mike and Vanessa Baxter on Last Man Standing, Eve appears to be a more natural fit. As a recurring character in Shifting Gears, she’s already part of Matt’s world, owning the dance studio across from his shop and even employing his daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings).
Our Take On Matt And Eve’s Kiss In Shifting Gears
A Classic Trope Done Right
Matt and Eve’s unexpected kiss in the Shifting Gears season 1 finale is exactly the kind of shake-up it needed. While the show has received mixed reviews, audiences are entirely invested in Allen’s latest ABC sitcom. Introducing an enemies-to-lovers arc between Eve and Matt in the series’ final moments was a smart move, as their fiery, opposites-attract chemistry is even more compelling than Matt’s brief spark with Charlotte. Whether they end up together or not, this storyline has the potential to make Shifting Gears even more engaging in the seasons to come.
