She’s Back? Beloved Grey’s Anatomy Star, 49, Teases Return to Hit Series

After a successful run on ABC’s flagship series, Grey’s AnatomyScott Speedman will be doing double duty for the network as a former photojournalist who returns from a stint in prison to become a private detective. Fans of Grey’s Anatomy can look forward to the series, entitled RJ Decker, but most are anticipating news of whether Speedman will be reprising his role as Dr. Nick Marsh on the medical drama. Showrunner Meg Marinis told Deadline tidbits that should inflame viewer sentiment about his possible return to Grey’s Anatomy.

“Obviously, deals haven’t been made yet, but we love Scott, and his character Nick and Meredith are still together,” Marinis explained. “He was also at the star ceremony supporting Ellen, so it was really great to see. Oh, and the fans were so excited to see him there with her.”

This isn’t necessarily a confirmation, but Speedman’s continuing relationship with ABC is a good sign for fans of Nick and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). At this point, Meredith’s first husband and romantic center of the series, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), has been dead for the better part of a decade, and fans have grown to love Meredith’s newest love interest. But many moving parts must be put into play before Speedman’s appearance can be confirmed.

Scott Speedman’s Role May Be Contingent on Ellen Pompeo

In a reversal of gender expectations, Scott Speedman plays the role of the romantic interest to Ellen Pompeo’s titular character, Meredith Grey. Pompeo has played the character since 2005, paying her dues as the headstrong surgeon. While Pompeo is still attached to the historic television series, it should come as no surprise that she has limited her time on the series. The actor has turned to other projects such as Good American Family, but promises that she will never leave Grey’s Anatomy for good.

However, Pompeo’s infrequent stints on the series may limit Scott Speedman’s ability to be in the series since he is attached to her as a romantic partner. Nick appears in a total of five episodes in Season 21, so if he does return, it’s likely it will be on a similar schedule. In his downtime, fans can also expect to see the actor as a leading man in RJ Decker. Deadline theorized that even if the show gets a full season order, he would still be able to do both, as it is on the same network. In the meantime, fans can catch Grey’s Anatomy streaming on Hulu and Netflix.
