Severide Saves the Day in the Season 13 Finale — But What’s Next in Season 14?

Severide (Taylor Kinney) pulled off a near-impossible feat in the gripping Chicago Fire Season 13 finale. He uncovered that Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) was being framed, even though all signs initially pointed to the firehouse chief being responsible for Robert Franklin’s incident. This revelation shifted the narrative dramatically and, most importantly, allowed Pascal to remain in his leadership role at Firehouse 51—for the time being.

Still, his position may not be secure going into Season 14. The Chicago Fire Department is undergoing a restructuring to improve efficiency, and according to showrunner Gwen Sigan, no one’s job is guaranteed. “We’ll definitely see him in Season 14,” Sigan confirmed in an interview with TV Insider, shedding light on Pascal’s growing connection to the firehouse crew.

She highlighted a pivotal moment in Episode 16—his late wife Monica’s funeral—when the crew showed up to support him. Pascal initially told them the service was for family only, and Mouch responded, “That’s why we’re here, chief.” Sigan reflected, “That really struck him. He’s a hard character to read, but that was one of those rare moments where you could tell it hit him emotionally. That’s when he began to realize he truly belonged.”

Yet, Pascal’s journey is far from over. “From that point on, especially as his relationship with Severide deepened, Firehouse 51 started to feel like home for him,” Sigan continued. “If he ruins it—because of his blind spot, which involves Monica and his pursuit of justice—there’s going to be real fallout. Severide will do everything in his power to help, but even he’s left wondering, ‘Did Pascal actually do something wrong?’ So, there’s still a lot Pascal will need to confront in order to stay.”

No One is Safe in Chicago Fire Season 14

In light of network-wide budget adjustments, the show began laying the groundwork for possible character exits. A storyline involving an auditor visiting Firehouse 51 to assess cost-cutting measures mirrors real-life challenges in emergency departments. Jake Lockett and Daniel Kyri will not be returning as series regulars in the upcoming season, and more changes could be on the way.

“We wanted to reflect what’s really happening out there right now,” Sigan said. “With the CFD making cuts and the auditor stepping in to say, ‘Big changes are coming,’ it’s clear that no one is immune. This season will be all about uncertainty and how the crew navigates that.”
