ABC has announced a third season renewal for the 20th Television procedural crime drama Will Trent, which is based on the series of novels of the same name by Karin Slaughter. The series, which premiered on January 3, 2023, follows Ramón Rodriguez as the titular special agent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s foster care system. Now, Will uses his unique point of view to pursue justice.
The early pickup comes as no surprise given the escalating ratings. Most recently, Will Trent rose to a record performance with just over 9 million multiplatform viewers over seven days, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Will Trent also stars Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, and Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner. Liz Heldens, Dan Thomsen, Slaughter, Oly Obst, Howie Deutch and Ramón Rodriguez executive produce.
News of the Will Trent greenlight comes on the heels of two other ABC drama renewals: Grey’s Anatomy for a record 21st season, extending its crown as the longest-running medical drama in television history; and 9-1-1, which shifted from Fox to the alphabet network this season and is confirmed for season eight.
Twenty three episodes (13 in season one, and 10 in this current second season) have been produced for Will Trent. There is no word on the number of episodes ordered for season three.
