NCIS: ORIGINS was renewed for a second season in February, and showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal just confirmed big changes are on the way for Gibbs as he transitions away from being a probationary agent.
“We’re inching our way there, definitely, in a way that we think is honest for the character,” North told TVLine. “I mean, just take the fact that in Season 1, we knew Gibbs’ gut was churning a little bit about Bugs and thinking, ‘Maybe there’s more to this story?’ But Gibbs didn’t go down that path, he didn’t gnaw at Franks and say, ‘Hey, my gut…’ — and he learned in the end he was right. Those are all stepping stones toward becoming the Gibbs that we met in 2003.”
When the show was renewed for Season 2, Monreal and North told Parade, “We are so happy that NCIS: ORIGINS has been so well received by both longtime NCIS fans and franchise newcomers. We’re thrilled to be returning for a second season and can’t wait to tell more incredible stories of Gibbs, Franks, Lala, and the rest of the team with the superbly talented actors who play them.”
“I dream about the show, almost every night,” Austin Stowell, who plays Gibbs, told PEOPLE in 2024. “He’s given me the greatest gift that I could ask for…This is the Gibbs who’s making mistakes, who’s living with ghosts and trying to put his life back together. And that’s a lot of fun for me to play.”
Season 1 saw Gibbs learn how to live again after the deaths of his wife and daughter. It also focuses on how that tragedy impacted his job and motivation behind catching criminals.
According to PEOPLE, Season 2 could “also highlight Gibbs’ relationship with his colleague Cecilia ‘Lala’ Dominguez after they had a flirty friendship throughout the first season.”
“The relationship between Gibbs and Lala is a unique and impactful one, and it’s one that we definitely want to highlight and see through to the end,” Monreal told Screen Rant in February.
However, a future relationship for the pair might not be possible. During the Season 1 finale, Lala got in a car crash and seemed to die.
“I won’t officially say that Lala is dead, but certainly we went into this saying that we needed to give ourselves the wiggle room to take these big swings and do what we felt was right,” North said previously.
Season two of NCIS: ORIGINS does not have an official release date but is expected sometime this fall.
