‘SEAL Team’ Gets a Movie, But There’s a Surprise Fresh off a sixth season on Paramount+, “SEAL Team” got even more love this week when Paramount announced at a presentation to investors that it’s also making a “SEAL Team” movie.
Sounds like a fun movie. What fan wouldn’t want to sit down with a bucket of popcorn at their local IMAX theater to see the team in action on the big screen? Unfortunately, we live in an age where the lines between film and television are constantly blurring, and the “SEAL Team” movie will be streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
That news won’t appease the self-proclaimed fans who have refused to tune in to the show since it moved from its CBS home channel to an exclusive streaming deal with Paramount+. At this point, though, you have to wonder if anyone who doesn’t watch the entire season with a week’s free trial or pay $4.99 a month is really a fan.
The show is described as a bridge between the cliffhanger ending of season five and the upcoming sixth. That intel suggests the show will get at least a minor reboot, with one or more characters not surviving the ambush in Mali.
It’s safe to say that David Boreanaz will be back. He’s a producer on the show, and his character, Jason Hayes, is central to the story. Unfortunately for fans, Clay Spenser (Max Thieriot), Ray Perry (Neil Brown Jr.), Sonny Quinn (A.J. Buckley), and Brock Reynolds (Justin Melnick) are all in danger after the attack, and since “SEAL Team” is a war movie, at least one of these men may not make it home safely.
Additionally, CBS Studios said the film will “expand the narrative universe” of “SEAL Team.” It sounds like we’ll have some new characters to replace those who aren’t returning.
Of course, we won’t know until we see the movie. Paramount+ didn’t offer any information about when we can expect to see the “SEAL Team” movie or when it might return for a sixth season.
Fans of another CBS military-themed show also got some news at the presentation. Paramount+ is getting a streaming-only spinoff called “NCIS: Sydney” that will premiere in 2023. That’s Sydney, Australia.
What you might not know is that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service operates in 41 countries around the world, so the Australian part isn’t necessarily that weird. However, NCIS only has 1,000 agents worldwide, so a real-life Sydney office would likely have a pretty thin staff.
“NCIS: Sydney” will be filmed in Sydney and use local actors and producers. Whether that means the civilian agents will be locals hired by our government or one or more Australian actors will be speaking with an American accent will be a mystery that will be solved after we watch the show.
