SEAL Team star David Boreanaz has dropped a mysterious clue about the fate of the military drama’s final season.
The series, which moves from CBS to streaming service Paramount+ in 2021, has kept viewers hooked on the story of Master Chief Jason Hayes (played by Boreanaz), along with his team of top Navy Seals.
The sixth season ended nearly two years ago, leaving fans in suspense about the team’s future as Jason opened up about his traumatic brain injury and how it affected his recent performance.
He found himself under severe reprimand from his superiors, including Eric Blackburn (Judd Lormand), who reprimanded him, saying, “You’ve made a terrible mess and left us no choice but to fire you.”
In the blink of an eye, more than two dozen other Navy SEALs poured out their hearts about their mental and physical health.
With a determined look on his face, lead actor David revealed that he had foreseen this season being his last, revealing this before last year’s Hollywood strikes rocked the industry.
In a heartfelt confession, he said, “For me, this has been a full-circle journey,” and continued, “Going into [this] season, even before the writers’ strike, I had decided that this was my end — which is something that not a lot of people know about.”
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut clearly believes that Jason should be at the center of the story, and David himself has hinted at a possible bleak end for his character.
In an interview with TVLine, he shared about the character’s future: “I think [spending time with the kids] has given him a glimpse into a future that he probably still feels a little awkward about.”
He went on to delve into the psychological impact on his character, stating, “Because what he thinks is effective may not be effective. The ultimate crux of this circle for these operators is, ‘How do they handle their kills?’ How does that impact them in a traumatic way both on the job and at home.”
The upcoming season premiere will test Jason as much at home as it does on the battlefield, exploring the SEAL’s struggle to reintegrate into civilian life. However, Boreanaz teased a traumatic turning point for Jason on one of his final missions, hinting at a deadly conclusion: “But ultimately, he may be taken away by the greatest force, and that is death,” he revealed.
