Fans of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) have been waiting with bated breaths for the remake of this beloved RPG classic. With Saber Interactive taking over development from Aspyr Media in August 2022, fans hoped for significant progress. But updates on the game have remained scarce.

The most recent statement from Saber confirms the game is still in development, but no significant details have been released. With expectations rising and patience waning, it’s hard not to feel sorry for those eagerly awaiting this remake.
The Remake For Knights of the Old Republic Has Been a Long Time Coming
The Knights of The Old Republic Remake, originally developed by Aspyr Media, was announced with much fanfare as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. However, by 2022, development had reportedly stalled and was given to Saber Interactive. Parent company Embracer Group claimed this move would ensure the game’s quality, but little progress has been visible since then. Fans expected this change to result in faster development, but they were mistaken.
The latest update from Saber Interactive came in September 2024. Speaking in a recent interview with IGN, Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer of Saber Interactive, confirmed that the team is still working on the game and will provide more information “when the time is right.” While this confirmation is reassuring in some ways, it’s not the substantial update fans were hoping for.
Yet, there were no specifics about what phase the project is in or when fans might expect more concrete news. For a project of this magnitude, such vague communication has only fueled skepticism about whether the remake will meet expectations—or even be completed.
With Saber Interactive now secure following a fresh round of investment, there is hope that the financial stability will allow them to refocus on KOTOR. However, after years of vague updates and delays, patience is running thin among the fanbase. While Willits has assured that more news will be shared “when the time is right,” fans are left wondering when, or if, that moment will ever come.
With Saber’s Recent Success, Things Should Hopefully Pick Up

What’s particularly frustrating for fans is the legacy that KOTOR holds. Originally developed by BioWare and released in 2003, the game is widely regarded as one of the best Star Wars video games ever made. Its complex characters, engaging storyline, and player-driven moral choices set a high bar for RPGs of its time.
The game has a devoted fanbase, many of whom have been eagerly awaiting the remake as an opportunity to experience this beloved title with modern graphics and updated gameplay mechanics. But with every update—or lack thereof—the dream feels increasingly distant.
The shift in developers raised hopes that the project might finally gain momentum. Saber Interactive, known for their work on games like World War Z and the recently successful Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, seemed like a strong choice to take over.
However, while this success is promising for the company’s future projects, it doesn’t necessarily translate to immediate progress on KOTOR. The company is juggling multiple high-profile titles, including Jurassic Park: Survival and John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando.
A lot has been left to the imagination of the fans. Do you think we’ll see more news anytime soon? Let us know in the comments!
