“Ryan Murphy Confirms New Expansion: 9-1-1 Franchise Adds Exciting Second Spinoff”

Major US cities, you’ve been warned: The next Bee-nado could be coming to your area.

9-1-1 co-creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed plans to expand the 9-1-1-verse with a second spinoff, set to air on ABC.

“[Series co-creator] Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing right now and we’re hoping to air next fall,” Murphy told our sister publication Variety on Tuesday. “We’re launching a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s exciting. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday nights. They’re obviously interested in that, so we’re going to give them another show that I really love.”

Murphy did not provide further details about the location or premise of the potential spinoff. ABC had no comment when contacted by TVLine. And at the risk of making all of this our own, news of a second 9-1-1 spinoff was one of the fall TV predictions TVLine made earlier this week; you can scroll through the rest of our predictions below.

The new season will be the third in the 9-1-1 franchise, following the OG Los Angeles-set series (currently airing its eighth season Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC) and the Austin, Texas-based 9-1-1: Lone Star, which is currently in its fifth and final season on Fox (Mondays, 8 p.m.).

“It’s sad, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just don’t work out,” Murphy continued. “It’s a Disney company that used to be on Fox, and it never worked out. And we’ve had a long time with it.” (The original 9-1-1 TV series also aired on Fox, but moved to ABC starting with its seventh season.) Lone Star co-showrunner Rashad Raisani previously told TVLine that “the business factors that are at play—the syndication, the sponsors, the networks, all of that—are beyond our creative control” when it comes to ending the show with Season 5, but promised that the final batch of episodes will “say a beautiful goodbye to each and every one of these characters.”
