Although ‘Twilight’ took his career to new heights, Robert Pattinson admitted the couldn’t help but be bothered by the popularity of the franchise and the attention it got him.
Robert Pattinson has starred in many movies since his Twilight years. But although he’s been steadily building his resume as an actor, he considers Twilight a unique experience on its own. But eventually, he couldn’t help but get irritated by the movie franchise’s hype.
How ‘Twilight’ changed Robert Pattinson’s career
Robert Pattinson wasn’t exactly a relative unknown before his Twilight days. His role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire gave him a nice boost in popularity. Still, however, that boost paled in comparison to his Twilight popularity, which almost immediately made him a megastar. According to his interview with Collider, the series also made it easier for Pattinson to grab future film roles as well.
“I mean it’s definitely different. You get offered stuff that you would’ve never dreamed of being offered before but that’s also scary as well,” Pattinson said. “You don’t have to audition for anything and so you’re like, ‘Well, I don’t want to do a movie just because it gets made. I have no idea.’ It’s a scary situation to be in, in a lot of ways. You really have to question yourself a lot more than before Twilight.”
This also created expectations for his future films that he didn’t have before being a part of Twilight.
“Now you’re expected to come into the movie and provide not only economic viability but also a performance as well because people are like, ‘You can’t just mess around. We’re employing you to be a star and an actor.’ So it’s difficult and it’s scary,” he continued.
Why Robert Pattinson was irritated by the ‘Twilight’ hype
Robert Pattinson’s life was everything but boring at the height of his Twilight fame. The young actor found himself being mobbed and chased by his diehard fans constantly. However, he once admitted that the attention he was getting from the franchise was starting to wear thin.
“I’ve learned to let it go a bit, but I’m still really bothered by it,” Pattinson once told the New York Times. “The more you are exposed, the more people irrationally hate you, I think we reached a point, a peak, with New Moon where the stories became so saturated into the culture that it started to feel normal. It’s like the tabloids don’t know what to write anymore because they’ve used up all the scandals.”
How Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’ compared to his ‘Twilight’ fame
Robert Pattinson shared that the attention he received for being cast in The Batman was nothing like his Twilight days. In an interview with the New York Times, Pattinson expected a bit more of a negative reaction. This was, in part, due to his past experiences being in mega film franchises.
“Maybe I’m just used to abuse by now. At least I didn’t get death threats this time — that’s a plus! It’s funny that people are so angry about Twilight. I never particularly understood it,” he said.
But in his older age, he doubted the same scrutiny that followed while filming Twilight would repeat itself with The Batman.
“People don’t really mess with me in the same way now that I’m older. When I was younger, the paparazzi would be crazy to me — I’d be leaving a place, and people would be screaming abuse — but I can’t imagine it going back to that,” he said. “Do people really care anymore? The gossip magazines have all kind of gone away, and everyone just puts their stuff on Instagram anyway.”
