On NCIS: Los Angeles, Miguel Ferrer commanded the screen as Assistant Director Owen Granger—a tough, unflinching authority figure who became a cornerstone of the series from Season 3 onward. Off camera, Ferrer was fighting a far more personal battle.
While continuing to film through 2016, Ferrer quietly endured throat cancer, showing up to set even as speaking became difficult. Co-stars and producers later shared how deeply moved they were by his determination. “It gave him something to look forward to,” said Chris O’Donnell, noting how the show became a source of strength during Ferrer’s final months.
Ferrer’s final appearance aired in Season 8, before his death on January 19, 2017, at age 61. Rather than dramatize Granger’s exit, the series chose a restrained, respectful farewell—mirroring the actor’s own dignity.
Beyond NCIS: LA, Ferrer left an indelible mark with iconic roles in RoboCop, Twin Peaks, Crossing Jordan, and more. Known for his unmistakable voice and commanding presence, he built a career defined by intelligence, grit, and depth.
