The Big Bang Theory has already resulted in two offshoots, which include Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. A recent social media post from Kunal Nayar, who played Raj Koothrappali in the flagship comedy, has sparked rumors about a new spinoff.
In a post to his Instagram stories, Nayar shared an image of himself dressed as Raj along with the caption, “Remember This Guy?” Although no further context was given, it did not take long for speculation about the long rumored spinoff starring the socially awkward particle astrophysicist, originally from New Delhi, India, to run rampant on social media. The image, captured by Screen Rant, can be seen below.
Nayar previously addressed the possibility of a Big Bang Theory spinoff featuring his character, stating that not enough time had passed since the flagship show ended. “To be honest, it feels a little too soon,” he said. “Can you do a [revival] only four years after your show ends? That’s not a reunion show, that’s just another season.” However, the actor did not rule out reprising the role. “If [the spinoff] were to happen, we’ll see what the universe says,” he added.
A Big Bang Theory Spinoff Is In The Works
Plans to develop a Big Bang Theory spinoff for Max have been in the works since 2023. While not much else has been shared about the project, The Big Bang Theorycreator, Chuck Lorre, recently confirmed that the series is still happening. However, he admitted that it’s still in its very early stages of development. “It’s still in the works. It’s endlessly in the works. It’s still prenatal,” he explained when asked if any progress had been made.
Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, The Big Bang Theory debuted on CBS in 2007 and ran for 12 seasons. “The series chronicled the lives of physicists Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), who work at Caltech and share an apartment in Pasadena, California,” the official synopsis reads. “Their lives are shaken up when carefree waitress and aspiring actress Penny (Kaley Cuoco), moves in across the hall.”
The show also featured their friends Raj, Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Raj Koothrappali (Nayyar). In later seasons, characters such as Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch), Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), were added to the main cast. The Big Bang Theory won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, which included the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jim Parsons.
