Queen Charlotte’s Dilemma: Bridgerton Season 4 Faces Major Challenges

After Bridgerton season 3, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has a major hurdle to overcome, and the solution depends on a royal character. In 2023, Netflix’s Bridgerton series launched its first spin-off series, Queen Charlotte. The six-episode show follows the romance between Queen Charlotte and King George III. While Queen Charlotte takes a lot of creative liberties with the true story of Queen Charlotte and King George, the series is just as engaging and entertaining as any regular Bridgerton season. The only problem is that the future of the spin-off series may not be as bright.

While the Bridgerton series will have eight seasons, each based on a book by Julia Quinn, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story doesn’t have that luxury. The spin-off series is an original story written by Shonda Rhimes. As such, there’s no sequel to the series that will be adapted into a TV series. To make matters worse, Shonda Rhimes has made some disappointing comments about Queen Charlotte’s future. Rhimes told Variety that, when it comes to Queen Charlotte, she doesn’t “want to tell a story that doesn’t need to be told.” Unfortunately, Queen Charlotte’s potential fate is even worse after Bridgerton season 3. If the chances of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story season 2 were slim, Bridgerton season 3 is even slimmer. In the third season of the Bridgerton series, one of Queen Charlotte’s biggest storylines comes to an end. As young women, Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton had a strange and surprising relationship. Agatha had an affair with Violet’s father, Lord Ledger. In Queen Charlotte, Violet discovers the relationship. She finds one of her father’s paper crowns among Agatha’s belongings. Despite this revelation, Violet says nothing, and Queen Charlotte ends without resolution. However, Bridgerton season 3 gave Lady Danbury and Violet the closure they really needed. After Violet developed feelings for Agatha’s brother Marcus, Violet asked permission to court him. Lady Danbury kindly told Violet that she needed her blessing, especially since Agatha had not received Violet’s blessing all these years. For the first time, Agatha and Violet acknowledged Agatha’s relationship with Lord Ledger. Violet implied that she forgave them, while Lady Danbury expressed her gratitude for their friendship. With Queen Charlotte leaving their storyline hanging, Bridgerton finally allowed the women to move forward in an honest way.

There may not have been enough reason for Queen Charlotte to return.

While this final chapter in Violet and Agatha’s Queen Charlotte story was satisfying, it did pose a major problem for the spinoff’s future. Now that Bridgerton season 3 has wrapped up the couple, Queen Charlotte season 2 will need to address one less storyline. Unfortunately, Queen Charlotte has wrapped up most of her storylines. In that way, there may not be enough reason for Queen Charlotte to return. As Shonda Rhimes has said, there would be no point in doing a second season of Queen Charlotte if there was no story to tell. Bridgerton season 3 wrapped up one Queen Charlotte storyline, but there was still one more character who needed closure: King George. In Bridgerton, audiences were able to learn what was wrong with King George III, explaining why he never really made an appearance throughout the series. However, Queen Charlotte went even further by delving into the character of George. In the spin-off, audiences saw George struggle with his mental health and the terrible ways the royal court tried to “fix” him. The ending of Queen Charlotte saw George successfully become king, but that’s where his story ends.

If there’s one reason why Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story should return, it’s George. While viewers can see how Charlotte became a fierce ruler in Bridgerton, it’s hard to bridge the gap between Queen Charlotte’s George and Bridgerton’s George. Viewers really don’t get much insight into George beyond Queen Charlotte’s ending. Since George wasn’t that important in Bridgerton, it would make sense to see more of his future in Queen Charlotte’s season.
