Queen Charlotte gripped viewers all around the world when it premiered on Netflix earlier this month as the cast wowed in their beautifully made outfits that helped bring all the characters to life.
Bridgerton is known for its extravagant outfits, but it looks like the show’s new prequel series may have exceeded expectations with its own set of couture gowns and tailored suits.
According to Indian star Amarteifio, who plays the young Queen Charlotte, when it comes to her character’s outfits there is more than meets the eye.
Amarteifio revealed there is actually a special meaning behind every aspect of the worn outfits throughout the series.
The actress explained how the color schemes of each style reflected a certain point in Queen Charlotte’s life.
An example of this is when fans first met the young princess when she was just 17 years old, the costume design used a “very pastel” mood board to reflect her “sweet and innocent” nature.
Amarteifio recalls the opening scenes of Queen Charlotte, saying: “Charlotte is 17 years old when we first met her, which is really young. She’s very naïve.
“All of her dresses are very sweet and innocent and pink,” she added, before explaining: “Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon, our costume designers, used very pastel mood boards and color tones to create that young, vibrant, sparky energy for Charlotte’s costumes in the beginning.
The actress then revealed how the symbolism behind Queen Charlotte’s dresses changed later on in the series, reflecting a much different mood, as the young Queen gained more life experiences.
“And then as she goes through tribulations with George and her pregnancy, and as the weight of her job starts to press down on her,” the star said.
“You can see the color palette changing; it gets darker, some purples, some darker reds, her dresses really reflect her mood,” she continued.
Amarteifio then details how the symbolism behind her outfits helped her get into character and portray Queen Charlotte throughout the series.
“It’s like a little mood ring, which is really cool for me, because when I see a color, it’s quite easily accessible for me to reach an emotion,” she said.
It’s nice to be able to have something physical and visual that I can see, that helps to make the emotions make sense as to how she’s feeling,” Amarteifio went on to say.
The Queen Charlotte star then revealed what her favorite look was from her time starring in the hit Netflix period drama.
“My favorite costume is the dress that Charlotte wore to the final ball in the series in Episode 106.
“It’s gorgeous, it’s huge; I love the cuts on it, the trim, the color. It sums up how she’s feeling in this scene. I think it’s quite a settling colour, it makes you feel quite relaxed, and I think she’s finding herself,” she continued.
Before adding: “By the end, she’s gone through the major wobbles, and now she’s plateauing and finding some kind of normality.
“And a tiny little detail that I really love is that Lyn and Laura put little stars and little symbols that relate to space on a lot of Charlotte’s costumes later on, because George is fascinated by the stars and astrology,” Amarteifio recalled.
