“Penguin: Colin Farrell’s New Series Redefines Mob Drama for a New Generation”

David Boreanaz teases his next TV project after wrapping up his seven-season run on SEAL Team. A familiar face to TV fans, Boreanaz broke out as Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, going on to play the soulful vampire on the spinoff series Angel for five seasons before starring alongside Emily Deschanel on the TV series Bones for 12 seasons. More recently, the veteran actor wrapped up his run as Master Chief Jason Hayes. He’s already looking ahead to his next role, with the end of SEAL Team behind him.

In an interview with Variety to discuss his time playing Jason Hayes, Boreanaz was asked about his next TV role. The actor denied that he’s always working, offering context for how he’s been a constant presence on the small screen for the better part of three decades. While he declined to provide any details about the story, the former Buffy star noted that his next potential TV role is “a love story about local mom-and-pop shops and everything they do.” Read Boreanaz’s full comment below: I’m a stubborn Taurus, so living in the present means I focus on what’s happening right now. The projects I’m working on right now were four years ago. Someone said, ‘Hey, you have this body of work.’ And I was like, ‘It’s not like I’m looking at a body of work. I have to ask myself, ‘How do I want to continue to grow as an artist?’ SEAL Team has allowed me to understand that dedication to doing it in a completely different way. So yeah, there’s a lot going on right now. Obviously I’m in recovery. It’s a tough process, and I have some really great things going on right now. Those accomplishments will be known soon, I guess. I don’t want to give everything away, but I will say this: It’s a celebration and a love story for local mom-and-pop shops and what they’re all about. And when I say local, they’re the heartbeat of America, the heartbeat of our social fabric. [It’s about how] the simple things in life have become so taken for granted, and if they’re not preserved or told, they’re gone.

Boreanaz, who served as an executive producer on SEAL Team, has previously shared that he watches gang dramas. This has led to speculation that the actor The actor will lead a Sopranos-style series, which has yet to be confirmed. It’s not even clear what stage the potential project is in or what platform it will be part of. But the general premise fits with the new details of Boreanaz.

It’s possible that the humble family business is a cover for something a little more sinister. Still, it’s an intriguing change of pace, because Boreanaz has always played characters who are nominally on the wrong side of the law. Angelus is pure evil, though he’s secondary to Angel. SEAL Team tries to grapple with the bloody actions of the US military, but Hayes is presented as the good guy. A gangster role could mean Boreanaz will play a fun antihero, a type he only occasionally leaned on in Buffy and Angel.

For a certain generation of TV viewers, especially those who fell in love with the medium in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Boreanaz is a television icon. While there are similarities between Angel, Booth, and Hayes, they’re quite different. And then there’s the actor’s sense of humor about his own fame, which he poked fun at on Family Guy and again on Bojack Horseman. While he doesn’t call attention to it, it’s an impressive run that’s still going strong after the end of SEAL Team.
