Have those passports ready because the NCIS franchise is embarking on a European adventure.
The highly anticipated spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, reunites two fan-favorite characters from the long-running series, Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) — or “Tiva,” as fans affectionately call them. In the new Paramount+ original, the duo find themselves in the middle of international spy espionage, years after moving on from their NCIS roots.
The show was originally announced in February 2024, and two months later, Weatherly and de Pablo revealed the title of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, with de Pablo reasoning that “it makes it really easy because the fans will know exactly what the show is. It’s about Tony and Ziva in Europe.”
“I expect intrigue, romance, the background of Europe, impossible situations that will make our life very complicated, but somehow a little something about love,” the actress continued in the Instagram video announcement in May 2024.
Here’s everything to know about NCIS: Tony & Ziva, including how it’s connected to the flagship series, who’s in the cast and when it will premiere.
What is NCIS: Tony & Ziva about?
According to the official plot description, the family is forced to escape across Europe after Tony’s security company is attacked. Along their journey, they will “try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.”
In a joint statement, Weatherly and de Pablo promised the new series will “be an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter.”
“We also want to acknowledge and thank the fans from around the world who supported the ‘Tiva’ movement for years,” it read, per Deadline. “To this day, they say hello in grocery stores and on the street to tell us how much these characters mean to them and ask what Tony and Ziva are up to now. This is for you!”
How is NCIS: Tony & Ziva connected to NCIS?
NCIS: Tony & Ziva follows two beloved characters from NCIS, Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo (Weatherly) and Ziva David (de Pablo). It will be the first time the actors will reunite on-screen in over a decade.
Weatherly began portraying Tony in season 1 of NCIS and departed the series after season 13 in May 2016. Although Ziva was presumed dead, she returned in the season 16 finale, with viewers learning that she had faked her own death and was in hiding. The following season, Ziva joined her former NCIS family to complete one final mission.
When the first images from NCIS: Tony & Ziva were released, Weatherly said, “It was surprising how Cote and I just fell into this new place with our characters. Informed by the past, illuminated by the present and trying to see a future together.”
“These characters are on the adventure of a lifetime,” he continued. “And hopefully, so is the viewer.”
Notably, NCIS: Tony & Ziva is set in Paris, where the fictional couple once worked together in the flagship show, calling back to the characters’ early ties.
NCIS: Tony & Ziva marks the seventh series in the NCIS franchise: NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Sydney and NCIS: Origins. NCIS and NCIS: Origins are returning for another season, but NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawai’i have since been canceled.
