“One Last Case?” Kathy Bates Hints at Retirement as Matlock Scores a Perfect 100%

It’s been just over two months since Matlock Season 1 went off the air, and Kathy Bates has teased the future of her critically acclaimed series. Bates stars as Madeline Matlock in the hit CBS series alongside Skye P. Marshall as Olympia Lawrence, Jason Ritter as Julian Markston, and more. The show received widespread acclaim upon its premiere, earning a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 78% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Bates has mentioned in the past that she feels like Matlock might be the final project of her career, but the show has already been renewed for Season 2, so she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Bates recently sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair, and she spoke about her future as Madeline Matlock. While she admits that she has “a feeling this is going to be the last thing” she does, she also shared an optimistic outlook on the show’s longevity, saying, “I do hope we run a good while. I really do.”

Matlock is a remake of the classic Andy Griffith-led series that ran from 1986-1995, which was created by Dean Hargrove. Jennie Snyder Urman was tapped to write this version of Matlock, with David Aguilar, John Lowe, Lizzie Perrin, Sheridan Watson, and more all working in the writer’s room. Kat Coiro was the only person to direct more than one episode of the series, and she racked up nine directorial credits during the first season alone. Coiro is also known for her work in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and The Spiderwick Chronicles. David Del Rio, Leah Lewis, Sam Anderson, Eme Ikwuakor, and Aaron D. Harris can also be seen in recurring roles in Matlock.

What Else Has Kathy Bates Been In?

Bates won an Oscar 25 years ago for her performance in Misery, and she’s since been nominated three times for supporting roles in Primary Colors, About Schmidt, and Richard Jewell. She’s also famous for starring as Molly Brown in James Cameron’s Titanic, and for playing Dolores Claiborne in the 1995 film of the same name. Bates even had a brief stint in The Office as Jo Bennett, founder and CEO of Sabre, the company that buys out Dunder Mifflin. She’s also been nominated for Emmys for her work in American Horror Story, Harry’s Law, and Queen of Hearts.
